I wanted to add that I did enjoy Final Fantasy VIII and IX, just not as much as others. I thought VIII had a really great narrative and I enjoyed the plot and that card game was even pretty cool. The espers (or whatever they were called for that game) were also well done and enjoyed how they fit in with the whole system. I just felt the junction system was too much of a hindrance and did not encourage magic use. I went through most of that game with just regular attacks because I didn't want my guys stats to drop. I remember spending a lot of time getting 100 Ultima's to junction with Squall and then never wanting to deplete any of them.

I thought IX had a great cast and was a fun throw-back game but that also hurt it too for me. It didn't really do a whole lot new and I felt like it was the first Final Fantasy that didn't really advance the RPG genre.

XII I just did not get into. That game was a chore for me from start to finish. I did not find the characters compelling and was disinterested by the game's main plot. I thought I would love the battle system but ended up feeling like it just took away from the strategy of managing the attacks of three (or four) different characters. Yes you could still micro-manage each character's actions but the system was pretty cumbersome and did not reward that style of play. I did manage to beat it, but haven't felt any desire to pick it back up. I hope XIII brings something more to the table. There's little point in giving the characters free roam during battles when you can't really affect the actions on screen anymore than you could in previous games, it just gives off the illusion you can (for example, you can't manually dodge enemy attacks or anything like that). I admittedly have not been following the development of the new title so I have no idea how it plays, I've just seen some of the character art.
