You unlock things through challenges instead of money.
It's even worse than GH 5 because it includes pro.
So if you don't play vox you won't get items from the vox challenges.
If you don't have drums you can't get drum items.
You can play expert guitar but didn't shell out $250 for a pro guitar you can't do those challenges so can't get those items.
Stuck on medium bass? Too bad no hard or expert unlocks for you!
Want that spiffy trenchcoat? Well you have to hit 10,000 notes. Don't worry though those silly backwards jeans you DON'T want will unlock after you hit 5000!
As opposed to just bulding up money and buying whatever you want specifically.
It does unlock for all band members if you unlock it but still if you can't unlock it to begin with either due to skill or just not having the required instrument that's not much help. There's some stuff that unlocks through quickplay/leveling up the band.
They changed it in GH 6 so it unlocks through ranks,which go up through stars,which you get more of through challenges but there's challenges for everything so you can still get whatever you want regardless of what you play or difficulty you play it on.
