I thought that this was a racing game for some reason so I always ignored it but it looks pretty cool. I really like the art style, it reminds me of the Epic Mickey concept art.

              This game looks good.
              But I'm tainted forever by GoW's 3rd-person, over-the-shoulder view.
I can't go back to FPS's. Only 3rd person for me from now on.

                Re: Brink (360/PS3/PC)

Interview: Richard Ham Explains What Makes Brink So Special

If you’re playing single player, you’re playing through the story effectively by yourself. If you’re playing co-op, you play that same story with a friend. If you’re playing online, the storyline is identical, but the enemies are controlled by real players. And those human players who are your enemies in a mission? They’re actually playing through their own separate storyline, and to them, you’re the enemy they have to defeat to complete their campaign.
We’re putting a lot of unlockable content in Brink. As you mentioned, there are quite a few outfits, hairstyles, clothing colors, etc., you can get which are all about changing your look and showing off how ‘leet you are.

But even more important than that are the abilities. Every time the player levels up, they can buy one new ability, in one of five different categories: soldier, medic, operative, engineer, or all-purpose. Each of these can only be used when you’re playing as a particular class, but remember, you’ll be able to change classes at any time while you’re in a mission. This creates a lot of really rich and dynamic situations where you can radically change the course of a mission, and the type of gameplay you’re involved in, by changing your class and focusing on an entirely different set of objectives. And because you change, your teammates and the enemy will change as well to adapt.

And of course, there are guns. We wouldn’t be a FPS without a wide range of weapons, in several different categories. In addition to new weapons you can unlock, there are also a wide variety of weapon attachments you can get, which change how your weapons behave and how you use them.
However, there is one part of character customization that does affect gameplay, very heavily in fact. There are three body types in Brink: normal, heavy, and light. This choice changes a lot of stuff: the bigger you are, the more hitpoints you have, but the slower you move. The smaller you are, the easier you are to kill, but you can climb to higher and higher obstacles and move like the wind. The weapons you can use aren’t based on your current class, but instead on how physically strong you are. As well, the stronger you are, the more equipment you can carry.
There are actually two complete storyline campaigns you will experience as you play through Brink -- one for Security and one for Resistance -- but you can keep your leveled-up character when you switch sides.
We’ve completely reworked the weapon load-out system we first showed at E3. Now when you use a command post in game, you have access to every weapon in the game that you’ve unlocked. We made the change because we wanted players to have as much freedom and flexibility as possible during a mission.
                ...

We’re planning for Brink to ship with 24 different weapons, spread across four different categories. We’re making sure that each of these has a really unique feel and use in combat, so it’s not just going to be a bunch of gun clones with slight stat differences.
We don’t feature players giving orders to each other, because we find that in real online games, players don’t tend to listen to each other! However, players generally will listen to a central voice of authority, if that voice comes from the game. So everyone on the team -- you and your squad mates, human players and AI controlled character alike -- all take orders from the central AI Commander, who’s always evaluating the situation on the battlefield and letting everyone know what they should be doing to help win the mission.

This Commander will reward everyone with XP for doing the right thing at the right time (the XP bonus I was talking about earlier). But, if there are players on your squad who just aren’t interested in doing what needs to be done, then the Commander will try to get others to do it by offering even more XP. So the game actually encourages players to become good teammates, and we find it’s a very effective system. And of course, in the case of AI-controlled squad mates, you can always count on them to do what they say they’re going to do -- or die trying!

                  Re: Brink (360/PS3/PC)

this game intrigues me, but then I read the previous two games this company did and was not so excited anymore. For those wondering, the games were Quake Wars: Enemy Territory and Wolfenstein. Not exactly two shining examples of good online games. Of course, it's tough to say about Quake Wars, which may or may not have been a good game but it was too tough to tell because you lagged out of every single game.

I would have to disagree on Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. That was a great online game for PC.

Quake Wars had a rough development with Splash Damage and id not seeing eye to eye on things. It seemed to turn out decent on PC, but the console versions were terrible, which were done by Nerve Software.

I obviously don't know how Brink will turn out, but it sounds and looks great from the previews and videos. It certainly looks way better than anything I saw of Quake Wars.

just going off of console impressions, I have no idea what the PC version was like.

The videos do look good, and definitely way better than Quake Wars, but with so many good games coming out this year I'll wait to hear a lot impressions and read some reviews before I even consider buying this game. Of course a multiplayer demo would go a long way to helping as well.

Enemy Territory was PC only. I think you might be confusing it with Return to Castle Wolfenstein or the newest Wolfenstein game.

                                ...

                                Eurogamer Hands-on

At one point on Security Tower he runs straight into an AI-controlled Resistance fighter. He immediately turns right and vaults through a gap between two pillars, landing in a slide move to end up behind cover in a useful flanking position. It's a slick enough manoeuvre, but it's all the more impressive because he does it without thinking - and without any pause in his eloquent description of how the dynamic objective system works.

SMART is reminiscent of the platforming controls in Mirror's Edge, but it's virtually all on one button - although you can use ducks and jumps as modifiers to speed up your progress. You start to wonder how it would feel in other first-person shooters like the legendary Counter-Strike, where we've spent many a gruelling hour jumping up stacks of crates or falling off rooftops.

Container City has a strong Counter-Strike feel to it, actually. That's not too surprising given that it was designed by David Johnston, the man who brought us classic Counter-Strike levels Dust, Dust 2 and Cobble.
All the levels we've seen and played so far follow this pattern: multiple objectives, each flowing into the next, each requiring a specialist (the Soldier plants bombs, the Engineer operates the crane, etc) and each benefiting from organisation, selfless actions and clever use of the environment.

Traditional team games - especially first-person shooters - struggle to get people to do the last three of those things, and one of Brink's goals is to overcome this. On the QuakeCon evidence it stands a good chance.

When our Security team struggles to breach the metal door on Container City we switch to the Medic class to offer support. We're tossing health packs to downed team-mates partly because it seems logical, but partly because the mission wheel - the slick one-button menu that shows you available objectives as you play - shows that it confers a lot of experience points.

Likewise, when we do break through and the trundling robot comes under sustained fire, it seems like a good time to opt for the Engineer and break out some unmanned turret guns to beef up our rearguard. Thanks to SMART it's possible to climb up a container away to the right of the metal door and provide overwatch for the slow-moving robot, too. When enemies appear on a platform nearby it's easy to vault over there and butt them in the face with a rifle.

You're not always playing with a full complement of human team-mates or enemies so the AI fills in the gaps and already does a solid job. While Wedgwood is demonstrating the Aquarium level he thinks he's coming under fire from an enemy on a raised turret so he climbs onto a pillar, leaps to the gangway and turns on his aggressor - only to discover it's one of his own men, and he was actually supporting him by taking out enemies approaching through a nearby door. Wedgwood says the developers teach the AI tactics and how each system works but they are constantly surprised at how well they adapt and improvise.
The more we play Brink, the more it comes together. Splash Damage jokes that it bribes people to help each other out - but this technique works. It sounds weird being able to do parkour stuff automatically by holding a button - but it works.

It's hard to imagine how much story can be conveyed by cut-scenes full of custom characters - but they work too, hinting at mysteries on the horizon at Founders' Tower, the spire that's visible in every skyline.

Splash Damage has made popular games before - Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is in the top three most-played online PC shooters to this day, Wedgwood claims - but Brink looks well on course to be its best yet.
