Re: 11 year old plays Contra for the first time
I'm sure he'd react much better if he was introduced to NES and SNES games and worked his way up from there.
How do you expect an 11 year old used to uber-flashy graphics, huge controllers, and tons of action to react to games that are 20 years old?Comment

Re: 11 year old plays Contra for the first time
Well they should be doing this on a weekly basis I assume. So maybe as they progress he will find a game that he enjoys more. But yeah, comparing everything to "Halo World at War" was relatively funny imo. I sure as hell wasn't expecting him to enjoy the game, but his descriptions of his feelings torward the game were classic. BTW, Contra kicks ace.Comment

Re: 11 year old plays Contra for the first time
Yup. It's hard for an 11 year old that grew up on Next Gen graphics to appreciate any thing that came from the NES days. For me I progressed from the Atari, to Commodore64 (Summer Games - High Dive was fun for hours), to Intellivision, to the NES. So the graphic leap was always forward. You can't expect the kid to think this classic is good at all.
The only thing that makes me laugh is the difficulty he has with it. That games was not bad compared to a Mega Man or even the original Metroid. Don't even put him on the original NES Ninja Gaiden. We had to memorize patterns and time jumps. The AI did the same thing every time and we had to recognize and adjust to this when we were younger then him. There were no immediate saves, and games didn't have the replenishing health bar. If something touches you, you die, don't let it hit you again. If you die too many times...game over, start again for the beginning. Tough love.Comment

Re: 11 year old plays Contra for the first time
How is the kid being objective when his experience of video games mainly consists of Halo and CoD? That's not objective at all. If you wanted an objective opinion you'd get it from someone who never played either game, or any games at all. All this kid did was compare it to the games he usually plays, how could you expect any answer than the ones he gave?
Obviously he's not completely objective, but he is far more objective than people who grew up with a game that's 20 years old.
Same thing when people act like Transformers (the TV show) was some art form.
The only thing that makes me laugh is the difficulty he has with it.
It was a hard game. Hell, it's most famous for having a code.
However, more importantly, he's never seen or played anything like it.
If you took some guy who could pimp out Battletoads or any other hard 2D game but never played or seen anything after the 16 bit generation and put them in Resident Evil 2 on the easiest difficult without giving him any background, the guy would continuously die within the first 30 seconds.Last edited by Cebby; 07-27-2009, 11:27 AM.Comment

If anything, I'd give the distinction of a more objective viewpoint to the gamer that came up playing video games from back then. They, at least, experienced both eras first hand as they happened. They would be in the better position, in my opinion, to give a more objective comparison between the two.PS: You guys are great.

Why wouldn't he have difficulty with it?

Bah, take anyone who plays MLB 09: The Show and hand them a controller with Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for SNES, and you'll see a positive reaction with nine out of ten test subjects.

I would bet my bottom dollar that if you could take Halo and CoD back to the 1980s, nobody would want to play Contra then either.Comment

Apparently the next game they're gonna have him play is Battle Toads...IIRC that was one HARD HARD game.
Wonder how he'll react to that?Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
