Dead Space 2 producer reflects on the changes and challenges of the sequel

Similar discussions have carried over into the development of the sequel, as Visceral Games continues to refine the gameplay. "We're taking it a step further," Papoutsis said of Dead Space 2, "so now, when you're not in combat or aim mode, you'll use one of your stasis recharge items. We've got health and stasis mapped" to a button.

In the sequel, "Isaac is more responsive, a little bit quicker," according to Papoutsis, plus "animations look better -- everything's just smoother." Additional gameplay tweaks include the ability to reload at any time with a single button press (previously, you had to be out of combat to do so) and the retuning of the kinesis power to be more functional in non-combat situations.
Another notable change is the introduction of free movement in zero gravity. In the first game, the player could only jump in a straight line during the zero gravity sections, but in Dead Space 2, jets on Isaac's suit allow you to rotate and move anywhere in dead space. "That's actually an idea from the first game that got cut for production time," Papoutsis explained, so the team made its implementation a priority for the sequel. "What you get out of it is more freedom, clearly, but we also have more interesting setups, where we can send the player through navigation puzzles that are a little bit more dangerous or scary because of that. Also, it gives you the opportunity to shoot while moving, which you couldn't do with the previous one."

Of course, there are also more explicit differences between the first game and Dead Space 2. Most obvious, the setting has changed from the Ishimura mining ship to the Sprawl, which Papoutsis described as "a full, thriving space city" -- where "you're going to encounter the locations that you might see in our world." These experiences with the familiar will be used as setups for big thrills. "If you watch any good horror movie, chances are they're tapping into some sort of instinct you have about a location," like a church or a dark hallway. "And in our case," Papotusis added, "the game makers are able to actually play on that and create tension and scares."

Papoutsis is well aware of the pressure on Visceral to exceed the accomplishments of the first Dead Space. As an original IP, that game succeeded, in part, because critics and consumers had few expectations. Now, as the Dead Space franchise has grown to encompass the Extraction spinoff and a host of transmedia projects, there's an established fan base that is hoping for a new highpoint in the series. "What we've done is special, people are very passionate about it, and it's our responsibility to try and do better than what we did the first time."

"We're measuring ourselves against the last game," Papoutsis summed up, "and if it's not better than that, we need to go back and work with it until it is."

Dead Space 2 Update - Zero Gravity and HALO Jumps

The zero-gravity sequences in the original game were a relatively simple matter of jumping from one surface to the other with nothing to keep you from going from wall to ceiling to floor and back again. In Dead Space 2, it's a much more free-floating experience in which Isaac's new suit--equipped with flaps that act as miniature boosters--lets him maneuver in any direction. The takeaway is that now you can go zero-gravity out in free space, which is precisely what happened in the demo.

Isaac has to float through empty space to fix those solar array panels. This requires zipping around and using telekinesis to get the panels reflecting the sun. The challenge arrives a moment later when it's revealed that a giant, bulbous tentacle-like beast called "The Nest" has formed on the exterior of the solar array station, launching small little explosive projectiles at Isaac. But whether you're calmly floating around or taking on this parasitic monster, the expansive backdrop and muffled audio seem to drive home the sensation of being out in the true void of space.

After fixing the station, Isaac jumps into an ejector pod to launch himself back toward The Sprawl. But the vessel soon breaks apart, sending you into a HALO jump of **** proportions. You're literally free-falling through the Titan's atmosphere, dodging the stray chunks of debris that litter this moon's sky. The onscreen effect is pretty impressive, with a truly remarkable sense of speed as you dangerously plummet down to the surface. We won't spoil how the jump turns out, but suffice it to say that Isaac somehow snatches victory from the jaws of being squashed into a human pancake.

The demo wrapped up with a fight against a swarm of necromorph enemies down in a ravaged transportation hub. We've covered most of the notable changes to the controls and combat before, but this fight gave us a chance to spy one of the newer tweaks: how developer Visceral Games is handling loot drops. If you'll recall from Dead Space, nearly every enemy dropped something valuable when you killed it, ranging from credits to ammo and other goodies. Nothing is set in stone just yet, but this latest build of Dead Space 2 required the player to walk up to an enemy and give it a big old boot stomp to get its loot.

Looking at it from two ways, this change could either get very tedious or offer a more rewarding way to collect goods while reducing the gamey look of an enemy bursting with goodies like a pinata the second it dies. Either way, this little tweak seems to be just one of many that show how Visceral is intent on reexamining a lot of the mechanics from the first game to see if they hold up today. Another example: the team is toying with the idea of letting you take an upgraded weapon or suit and reset those upgrades (or "respec," if you want to use proper jargon) in order to explore different weapons that you might not have used before.

            IGN: Multiplayer Preview

Here, players face off in four-on-four matches. One side plays as a group of four humans decked out in suits like Isaac's, and the other four combatants take on the roles of Necromorphs, the horrible reanimated corpses/aliens we all know and love. Players brawl in objective-based maps, one side wins, and then the roles are flipped and the humans become monsters and vice versa. You'll be leveling up as you play, but not much was revealed on that front.
Greg Miller, IGN PlayStation Executive Editor

While it's true we only got a small taste – two of the five objective-based maps -- the Dead Space 2 multiplayer really didn't click for me. It's not that it's broken or that I didn't have any fun playing it; it's just that it didn't feel like Dead Space. There was no suspense – no peril. Here I was running around the sprawl as a human, but by the time I told my guy to stomp the Necromorph in front of him, the bad guy was behind me and shooting me to death with his friend. It was a bit frustrating, and that continued on the Necromorph side; I couldn't seem to find a beast I really enjoyed. When I was on the wall as the Lurker, the camera would swing wildly as I changed locations. When I was the Pack, it seemed like the window to leap and grab onto an enemy was extremely small – it took me, probably, a dozen times to finally land the move.

I imagine that the control stuff will get ironed out by the time Dead Space 2 ships, but notwithstanding, the gameplay feels decidedly un-Dead Space. I want the tension, horror and beauty of creeping through the Sprawl. I don't want the kill-die-respawn repetition of this. If they had to add multiplayer, I wish that the developers would've gone for a more straight-forward co-op mode like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Hopefully, there's an option like that in the final game.
            Jack DeVries, IGN Associate Editor

Dead Space multiplayer is the complete opposite thinking to why I loved the first game, but I was willing to see what the team came up with. There are some things that are cool in here. I think the idea of having it be team-based objectives (instead of a deathmatch) is the right way to go.

Multiplayer feels a lot like a trimmer Alien vs Predator. I wasn't really feeling the actual experience, but I think that was due in part to me sucking at aiming and none of us bothering to actually team up. All of the Necromorph attacks are designed around group attacks. One guy spits some acid, and that gives the other guy a chance to leap up and eat the human's face. None of us were really communicating though, so it didn't feel all that cohesive.

The Escape map was my personal favorite because it felt more like the game. The objective was "Get the hell out of here!" Still I would have preferred it if the level was more straightforward and less about having to access terminals. If it was just a full on chase scene – like that very first moment in the original game where you run for the elevator – I'd be way more into it.

Ultimately though, I just want a Zero G level. Visceral would have to be all kinds of stupid not to have one of these maps be Zero G. Honestly, I'll take Zero G Basketball even!
            Daemon Hatfield, IGN Senior Editor

I'm one of the biggest Dead Space fans you're going to find, and I'm very excited for the sequel. But when Visceral announced it was working on a multiplayer mode for Dead Space 2, I was skeptical. What I liked about the first game was the feeling of dread it gave me as I slowly crept through its corridors, never sure when the next Necromorph surprise would come. I like moodiness of it; the isolation. Running around in the chaotic madness of an online multiplayer game killing and being killed by other people really isn't what I want to do in Dead Space. And you know what? My suspicions were justified.

I didn't have any fun playing multiplayer in Dead Space 2. It feels like an unnecessary feature tacked on to try and sell a few more copies. An elegant horror game is transformed into a clumsy mess. Now, with that said, I still think Dead Space 2 is going to be fantastic. I don't believe the development of the single-player mode has been affected by the multiplayer game and they are being worked on by two different teams. We were only shown two multiplayer maps and there are yet other multiplayer modes to check out. So I'm still very excited and will be playing the hell out of Dead Space 2 – but what I've seen so far doesn't sell me on Dead Space as a multiplayer experience.

The problem is unless you're call of duty or halo all the multiplayer add-ons feels "tacked on". I like multiplayer, but only call of duty for some reason. I played alot of Call of Juarez online and while it was fun it would have been fine just a single player experience. The multiplayer became a grind rather then fun.

I'll say, the best games I've played were all single player only games. Including dead space 1, Batman AA, Bioshock 1, all worth the steep price of admission (Though I buy my games later when they drop in price but that's because I can't afford 60.00 games).

And don't get me started on co-op games. eecchk, that's why I couldn't get into borderlands. I tried but it's geared towars co-op.

All and all I can live with dead space having a multiplayer option but please don't put any multiplayer trophies/achievements in that have to count towards 100% completion, that's the worst.

EXAAAAACTLY. Honestly, coop is one of the FEW things that makes me nervous with the next Batman title. It was a perfect solo game, and if I have to deal with some dumb **** AI partner, I'm going to be VERY disappointed.

What's funny is, most the folks who bitch that multiplayer WASN'T included never end up playing it when it is anyway, because they end up right back with COD or Halo.

EDIT: I played a few matches and as of now necromorphs has won everytime. No one has a clue what to do as the security team. Everyone decides to sit in the middle and just rack up kills. There's no explanation of what to do, well at least I can't seem to find any.
