I'm going to see if I can hold off without playing the demo just to be as surprised as possible, but I really, really hope there is a huge story mode, if not twice as large as the original game's story mode.

My sister doesn't seem interested in anything the online community makes, plus the fact it may take a while for the best of the best to come out.

LittleBigPlanet 2: Why You Should Be Freakin' Pumped

For the past few days, I've been in Sackboy heaven. See, the preview code for LittleBigPlanet showed up in the IGN office, and it's packed with levels from the upcoming sequel. It isn't the whole game and there's plenty left to be discovered, but just this dozen-or-so level taste has reawakened my love for this franchise.

Now, I could sit here and type line after line about how the jumps are still floaty because that's how LBP plays and you need to get over it, how you need to drag things around with R1 to make certain jumps and a ton of other minute details. However, I'm not going to. We've written a lot about LittleBigPlanet 2. In the past seven months, we've posted six previews. Hell, if you count this one, we've posted seven in seven. Don't get me wrong, LittleBigPlanet 2 is huge and has enough to keep us writing for years, but with you already knowing so much, there's really no sense in beating around the bush.

I've been playing LittleBigPlanet 2 for about a week now, and here's why you should be freakin' pumped for Jan. 18, 2011.

kotaku Preview: All They Did Was Add More Fun

I will happily argue with anyone that the first LittleBigPlanet was a game more easily appreciated than enjoyed. A marvel of technology and art, maybe not of play. I don't think the sequel will have that problem.
But I confess that I admired the first LittleBigPlanet more than I hankered to play through it. The game looked great, but, as a side-scroller, it had to compete with my favorite Mario games. It had to vie with my memories of the best Kirby and Castlevanias, the old Metroids and rest of the wonderful two-dimensional games I've enjoyed for years. LBP 1's levels were must-see, but, good as some were, they didn't feel like must-play.

As I played LBP 2 this morning, my feelings were transformed. The game's creators at Media Molecule have added great gadgets — a Bionic Commando-style grappling hook and a cake gun that shoots cakes that stick. There may be more. That's all I've wielded so far. The new items make moving through the game's developer-created levels more fun. Thanks to the developers' smart positioning of grappling points and trampoline-like jump pads, they make moving through the levels more rapid. I didn't hop through LittleBigPlanet 2's levels. I twirled through them. I still don't love the floaty jumping in the LBP games, but the jump pads offer a more spiked leap; the other items make jumping a less common means to get to the end.

There are some 40 levels in LittleBigPlanet 2's campaign, with the expectation that gamers will add thousands and thousands more through the game's online-networked creator community. I tried pieces of maybe a quarter of the first 40 and I was having a lot of fun. My old experience was that I played LBP with the desire to quit out of each level and hurriedly see what other levels had been created and uploaded. This morning, I wanted to keep playing what was there.

I'll be playing more of this game, of course. I haven't even tried the game's new level creation tools. I will try them soon, hopefully, when I can get back to my couch.

Consider me impressed. And consider LBP2 a game that just might have better level design than you'd expect. It'll be out for the PlayStation 3 in January. I'm looking forward to it.

But the new LBP, set for a January release on the PlayStation 3 is now the first one I want to commend for level design. Thanks to some borrowing from Bionic Commando and the addition of a gun (!)

Check out this Little Big Planet 2 Kevin Butler/Best Buy parody. Rumors I've seen this morning have said that some jokesters at Sony created this using the editing tools in LBP2!

Now that 2010 is drawing to close, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our fantastic community members, as well as all of our friends in the media who continue to support LittleBigPlanet. We’re now less than a month away from our January 18th release and I’m thrilled to report that LittleBigPlanet 2 has now ‘gone gold,’ meaning the game is 100% finished! The wait is nearly over and as you might imagine the folks at Media Molecule are extremely excited.

                              First Review!
The next piece of good news is that LittleBigPlanet 2 reviews are starting to come in. Online reviews won’t be posted until after the new year, but print magazine impressions will trickle in over the next few weeks and that started this week with our first worldwide review from the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine — an impressive 10 out of 10! Here are a few choice quotes…
“Full of simple-to-grasp tools, all with huge potential—and you could easily lose more time to LBP2 than any other game released in 2011.”
“Never going to build anything at all? This is still an indispensible package, rammed with creative potential and imaginative gameplay.”
