I remember playing the original Resident Evil games on Playstation1 growing up and falling in love with them. I was already a fan of horror movies, and Resident Evil making horror games more mainstream was awesome to me. I remember many nights sitting up in the dark, all the lights off, volume cranked, walking around the abandoned police station in RE2 and knowing for a fact I wasn't sleeping that night.

What made those old games so great wasn't the action. It was the atmosphere, the story. It was the creaking of the floors in the distance, the echoing moans, and the drifting footsteps. It was opening an old wooden door and not knowing whether a licker, a horde of zombies, or a typewriter to finally save your progress would be behind it. It was walking down a hallway and a bird crashing through a window and forcing you to press pause and change your drawers. The action was clunky and frustrating sometimes, but the games weren't about the action. They were about the mood. And that's what made them classics. It's the same reason I still enjoy games like Silent Hill and Alan Wake.

I understand from a business perspective why Capcom would want to reach a broader audience with more action-oriented gameplay. Shooting games are guaranteed hits nowadays. And they're trying to make money.

But while playing the demo (particularly Chris and Wesker Jr's) I couldn't help but miss those old days with the original Resident Evil games and the dread that's completely missing from this demo. Having an AI partner, blasting away at 50 "altered soldiers" in broad daylight just doesn't pack the same punch as being alone in a mansion with only a few lights guiding your way.

Unfortunately, I don't think Resident Evil will ever get back to where it was. And for gamers that love the more action-oriented versions, that's awesome. I just miss the atmosphere. The chills. The guy saying "Resident Evil" with a loud boom when you hit start and knowing s*** was about to get real. To me, that will ALWAYS be what Resident Evil is about.
    This post deserves an applause.

I agree 100% with everything you said. Atmosphere really was the thing that made the series special and it is unfortunate that the old Resident Evil "feel" is probably gone for good.

The game is pretty fun to me. Not GOTY worthy, but not deserving of the 4 one reviewer gave it. IMO, it shoud get no worse than 7.

I broke down and bought it today -_-

I'm too big of a fan of this series. Regardless of the negative reviews I'm going to get after it tonight.

I think I'm going to use the advice of the, play two chapters of each, before getting going in to each campaign.

The game is really enjoyable if you like watching the loading screen for hours on end.

Loading's that bad eh? I've heard the amount of QTEs are horrible too.

                Started playing Jake's campaign first.

One comment. The camera almost makes playing this game unbearable.

After Leon's campaign, I gotta be honest, this game goes downhill quickly. The action stuff in the other two campaigns just isn't very good and the camera can't keep up. I still wouldn't give it a 4/10, but yah, 2/3 of this title is just... bad.

Really thinking about returning it. I can't see anything. And when you move too fast it's very disorienting.

                    Very disappointed so far.

                        It's on 2. -_-

It's because of how close it is to your character. It's like on top of you. Who said yes to that? Ridiculous.

IMO, the problem is that the camera was great with the older RE4 controls. The issue is they simply slapped a free moving camera and controls onto an old game design, and now it's a mess when things get hectic.

I literally just ran around in circles for an hour with Jake in the snow storm trying to figure out where the hell I was.

                            This game is a mess.

On top of that, it isn't even survival horror. There are no games, no puzzles, nothing left of what RE used to be. Bunch of run and gun, pick up ammo and herbs and keep it moving. Like WUT?

That snow level was turrible......I am so glad I didn't start out with Jake or else I probably would of quit the game. If anything, this should of just had Chris and Leon with maybe having Jake/Sherry in the storyline only.

I can understand your complaints, but the thing is that RE5 was the same way in terms of gameplay.

This franchise needs a total reboot.

I disagree a little here. RE5 was a faster paced RE4. Yes, it started dropped much of the "survival horror", but there were still a few creepy moments, and the gameplay was as tight as ever. RE6 however, is just a mess control/camera wise.

RE5 may have started the series shift, but it was still a very good game, and technically sound.

I'm telling you guys, it's like they took the same gameplay code, but when they tried adding the free moving camera and move-while-shooting mechanic, the whole thing collapsed in on itself.
