Re: Halo Combat Evolved Remake 11/15

The reviews for HD remakes are typically a little odd to me. They complain about odd things, question the package a lot, etc.

Halo CE is THE game for me. I bought an Xbox for it, and got into First Person Shooters. I can't wait to play through it with the upgraded graphics, and the map pack for Reach is a group of fantastic maps in combination with the classic Anniversary gametypes in matchmaking (3sk Magnum, no armor abilities, the new awesome maps) will get me back into playing Reach MP as well.

Can you buy all the maps for Halo Reach separately through xbox live. This is kind of like Halo ODST where they give you the new map packs for Halo Reach all in the Halo CE Anniversary package. Right.

You get the news maps with CEA if you buy it (you can also download those to your hard drive to use all the maps with Reach). You can also buy just the maps as DLC tomorrow (the 7 maps for 1200 MS points).

I can't say I'm disappointed, as they did a fantastic job with the game. The visuals and remastered sound are incredible. The game just feels outdated. Doesn't feel fresh (as I guess it shouldn't), not sure what I was expecting, but it's Halo from 10 years ago. Great trip down memory lane, but maybe some games should be left as a memory, for me at least.

Where it really falls flat is multiplayer. I just never fell in love with Reach online, and that's exactly what this is. Now I knew that, but for some reason I figured it would be different. The maps are incredible online, I mean they look so good, but feel smaller than original.

I wish they would have given multiplayer exactly as we saw it in Halo 1 and just kept it offline with bots and friends on your couch in addition to the online portion. I miss the original feeling of multiplayer, this one definitely doesn't grab it back.

All in all, they did a great job updating a classic game. Just I'm not in love with it like I hoped.

I had a blast playing the classic playlist yesterday, most fun I've had with Reach MP. The maps are fantastic, and the Anniversary gametypes are very fun.

I'm going to play some of the campaign today.

Halo was the first shooter I played on console. I didn't think I'd be able go from mouse/keyboard on the PC and get comfortable with the controller, but I learned with this game. So for old times sake I picked up the new HD Halo 1.

9 or so years ago I played through Halo once. I must have got Master Chief killed and repeated a lot, because the first level of the the game I played last night (Piller of Autumn) I remembered very well. They did a real nice job updating the graphics. Its still fun for me. I liked the little of the mp I played too.

I can't wait to finally pick this up, I was hoping for a BF or CM sale but no dice on this one. I keep watching the videos and just in awe on what 343/Saber has done with this. Just too many darn games of late.

I didn't buy the original Xbox at launch, but about 4 months after it released and both Halo and NBA Inside Drive were my first titles I had bought for it. That was a day of pure gaming bliss. I couldn't believe how well a FPS had been created for a console, only other one to date that was just as good was Goldeneye for the N64.

I wish more shooters would take the route that Insomniac did with Resistance 3 and had leveling up of your guns. I thought it was very cool, small RPG like element without making it a total RPG. It would help make the Halo 4 campaign even cooler. I hope some of the goofy guns are gone too come the next game.

I finally got a chance to play this last night and I will say this is about what I expected. 343/Saber did a great job in updating the visuals. I've been a big complainer about the interiors looking very bad in Halo games, here from what I've seen so far they don't look too bad. Even when switching back to the old graphics, not bad, but prefer the newer ones. Brings back some memories to when I bought the Xbox and Halo was my first game for it. I still get shivers down my spine when MC first lands on Halo, was just a cool experience.

I really wish this was a both Halo 1 and 2, would of been a very nice package deal in bringing the entire franchise to one platform.

Hoping that 343 takes Halo 4 in a new direction in terms of enemies and weapons. Don't get me wrong, I like the Covenant and think the grunts are kind of cute like little gremlins. 343 has already said in an interview to expect a new set of guns/weapons so this will be good.

Based on events of Halo 3 and what we know about the initial setting of Halo 4, I think (and hope) we can expect a pretty new set of enemies and weapon sandbox in Halo 4.

I love CE, but for some reason I'm only played through about half of the remake. I've just been busy I guess, looking forward to getting through the rest of it.

Has anyone played Halo 2 on the 360?

I am about finished with Halo A and wanted to play Halo 2 next. Was considering the PC route, but would prefer on the 360. How well does Halo 2 run on the 360 as a BC title? Too bad 343 didn't add this to the Anniversary disc as an updated version.

The visuals being updated really helped through the torture of going through the library once again. I hated the library with a passion when playing this on the original Xbox. 343 should have omitted some of the cut and paste crap design out of this. LOL!

Not sure where to put this, but quite awesome fan made video:

                          <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JyUdWe90svs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Reader Philip Kang can answer that question. Kang sent over his 22-minute-long "Eye of the Storm" mini-movie and included some information as to just how arduous the film-making process was:

                          • Each shot took an average of 5 hours or more to capture. The first 2-minute scene is made up of around 55 unique shots. That means it took approximately 275 hours to capture the shots for that scene alone.

                          • Since Master Chief was the only controllable character, marine and enemy AI had to be painstakingly manipulated to set up most of the scenes. It required over a hundred play-throughs just to stage the action required, not including blown takes.

                          • The camera had to be controlled in real time, without any coordinates or keyframes, and, in almost all cases, without any parenting or targeting options. Long story short, it was really easy to mess up when trying to capture the footage. Combine this with the lack of rewind in Halo 3's campaign-based saved films and you have a recipe for rage-induced, controller-tossing disaster.

                          • Probably as a result of the points mentioned above, Halo: EOTS is the only Halo machinima of its scope to ever be captured entirely in Campaign mode.

All the texture pop-in in cinematics that are present when playing on the Xbox are gone when you play it on the 360. Other than that it runs smooth as you would expect, but after playing Anniversary, the visuals are going to be a significant downgrade (it was a fantastic looking game for its time though).
