    re: Hitman: Absolution

The Christmas 2012 issue of PC Gamer contains a review by Tom Francis who did a number on Hitman: Absolution with some very unflattering things to say about it. The fact that the review's sub-header reads "Hitman: Absolution is a mess. The police do not expect Blood Money is involved" should say everything.

IO Interactive and Square Enix may have very little to be proud of as every portion of the game is said to be bad. The review pans the game for its art style and overuse of bloom, poor story, small levels, pointless objectives (e.g. open a door), no saves, bad AI.

The review also points out that the game actively encourages you to kill guards and sentries unlike previous Hitman games, which emphasized stealth over all else. Not that it matters—as many of the assassinations you perform are pre-determined cutscenes in which Agent 47 fails to kill his target, rendering all of your work pointless.

Finally, the review notes that the PC port of the game was done so poorly that the game even tells you to "gently" press your mouse button, as if it were the same as an X360 controller. In addition, the performance of the game was sub-par on PC Gamer's machines, running at a sluggish 15~ FPS.

For all their efforts, the game receives a score of 62 out of 100 with a verdict that reads "A passable stealth game, but one that betrays almost everything that, until now, has made Hitman great."

I would think Monday or Tuesday the week it comes out...I'd think IGN and the like would have a review at least on release day, sometimes it comes earlier if the devs allow it.

I'm a bit worried, but I'm not buying at release anyways, so no rush for me, I'll hear all the reviews/input.

Same here. I'll wait for impressions before opening mine.

Ugh, that's horrible. Time to refund my preorder with Greenman.

BTW, this is what did me in:

Sounds like small levels with predetermined paths. Making your way into a mission neutral place, killing a guy without being seen, then making your way out of the place without raising any alarms was part of the allure. Hell, just finding unique ways to kill your target was a big part of the allure. I'm really disappointed, in both IO Interactive for putting out such a crappy effort, but also all the previewers that didn't have the balls to actually be honest for a change. Not pointing out technical faults is one thing, it's understandable, but not pointing out fundamental changes in the game's structure while trying to word things to sound like that fundamental change doesn't exist is bull****. I know previews are almost without fail just fluff pieces, but to actively paint a picture of the game as something it's not is infuriating.

Contrary to that OXM gives it a 9:

Tucked within the meaty folds of OXM issue 92 you'll find the world's first review of Hitman: Absolution on Xbox 360 - a triumph of stealth and sandbox design that retains "everything that fans have ever loved about the series", but delivers those features with "beguiling flexibility". There is a big, reassuring number at the end of that review, and that number is exactly one point less than 10. Sweet.

Wannabe balding killer Matt praised the game as "slick, thrilling and well paced with jet-black humour", singling out its user-driven Contracts feature and diversity of mission types. "Absolution genuinely makes you feel like the most dangerous man in the world," he observes at one point. We haven't dared turn our backs on him since the copy went to press.

                  i already preordered.
im pretty sure the story mode is ruined.
Dont like how they tell you what to do. It seems as though the freedom is gone. They pretty much turned it into splinter cell.

at least the contacts mode seems to have freedom. Thats what I'll be playing.

That PC review was cringe worthy. Now we get a 9 from OXM.

This is one of my most anticipated games of the year. I just figured IO, with its Hitman track record, would put out another Hitman gem. Now I am worried.

I bet that reviewer played it on easy to breeze through it. I'm sure purist difficulty, and shooting for Silent Assassin rankings will keep some of the open endedness in completing the hits.

It'll probably be fine, but I hope the levels give you freedom still like others mention....

I hate the cutscene focused gaming we get now from COD...it's fun sometimes, but i hate being on rails the entire time.
