    Re: NES/SNES Gaming Thread

Well I literally just finished packing up my Gamecube and all games and extras, the old gameboy games I had and all my original XBOX games. Didnt even realize I had an unopened HALO in the mix.
Stored them with the rest in attic. I'm forcing myself to stop there. All 360 games I have and PS3 games (except an unopened Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto Complete Collection) I will get rid of along with the systems. In the end it will be my kids that have to deal with them all and after going through a lot of stuff (1000x's worse on a farm) after my Dad passed, I figure enoughs enough.

When the new systems start getting close I'll dump the current ones.

      Re: NES/SNES Gaming Thread

Started a new Final Fantasy game in a way I haven't played it before - mostly mages (Red, White, Black) with a thief in the lead. Been seeing a lot of this:

Interesting way to play it though, being forced to rely on his evade ability (boosted by INVS if needed) in order to survive. Was especially fun before I found a decent armlet (they don't kill the evasion stat like armor does) and just using regular clothes as armor. Up to the Earth Cave now, and taking on Lich soon...that should be interesting.

I've almost never played this game without a fighter before.

Edit: Lich down...that was actually quick and pretty easy. Maybe I'm a tad overleveled.

I can't stop playing Link To The Past. Beaten it twice in the last month and am going again. Right now I'm on Dark Palace 2, and having trouble finding the 6th key. 10+ times completing this game, and every time I've had trouble with key lol.

I haven't played Skyrim yet, but more and more I find myself thinking, "This is THE greatest game EVER!"

PS - I've also been playing McKids... what a weird game. I used to always hate on this game, but it's really not THAT bad and pretty creative.

That is sweet! I may have to hit him up for a Giants-themed NES.

Speaking of the NES, GameStop is now offering some NES/SNES/Genesis games as PowerUp Rewards. I saw that Tecmo Super Bowl for NES is coming soon, as is the SNES version and Tecmo Super Bowl III.

I messaged Jayrod2 who makes the custom NES. $130 for customizing the system and $30-35 for each controller. Plus you need to buy an NES, or he will and you pay him.

Some serious dough but damn it would be cool to have.

I saw something saying SMB is 43,000 points, which equates to about $2000 lmao.

                  Re: NES/SNES Gaming Thread

I picked up a Game Boy Player for $10 today at Gamestop, mostly for the GBA support since I already have a Super Game Boy.

But I put in Metroid II and haven't been able to take it out lol

This game is just brutal. There's no world map, save points are sparse, and most of the environments look the same due to the Game Boy's seaweed graphics.

You spend a lot of time wondering where exactly you are and where you should be going. However, I'm soldiering through it and am about halfway through the game (22 out of 40 Metroids killed). I've had this game for like 20 years now, and this is the furthest I've ever gotten lol

It is funny though how many secret alcoves I remember from playing it many years back.

The soundtrack is awesome -- maybe the best in the series? And it has a really nice atmosphere once you set the Game Boy's color palette up right.

Did you know: the Game Boy can only use 4 colors at once.

Metroid II. That game caused me more rage quits than any other game I've EVER played lol. I just remember getting stuck so many countless times, and if I somehow got lucky and found what I needed to do, it'd only be a matter of time before I was stuck again.

I should pick that up again, seeing now I can use the interwebz to help me finally beat this beastly game.

Our local used CD had a 1/2 off sale on Saturday. I picked up these games all for $50
                    Mega Man 2
                    Mega Man 5
                    Final Fantasy
                    Castlevania
                    Adventure Island 2
                    Faxanadu
                    Donkey Kong Classics
                    Kirby's Adventures
                    M.C. Kids
                    Friday the 13th
Pretty decent deal considering some of the titles there.

FWIW, I did beat it, after much early-game dying....by the time I got class change and thief became a ninja, things got a hell of a lot easier. Got into the old FAST/SABR pattern which makes things die with the quickness.

Is it even possible to beat this game without the FAST/Haste spell? Even the strongest fighters do crap damage to bosses without it. It's always been an extremely useful spell in FF, but never more so than in the first game.

It is a godsend. Much better than the crappy map that Nintendo Power printed in their magazine way back when.

Been a while since I've seen this thread. I've been playing some unreleased NES games on pc lately, and am thinking of ordering a repro cart or two soon. retrousb.com has Gradius 2 and Mr. Gimmick, so I may just get them. Anyone ever buy reproductions before? Any thoughts/reviews?

I had a free moment this morning, so I decided to play Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers. That moment stretched out a bit and eventually, 20 years after initially renting this game, I was able to beat it for the first time. Wasn't as tough as I remember, though I suppose that tends to be the case when comparing to something you did in 2nd grade. Turns out it's quite advantageous to collect as many flowers and stars as possible (and to capitalize on the bonus rounds).

Or I guess you could just be these guys:

                                As of late:

Gauntlet Dark Legacy (PS2) -- A nice sequel to Gauntlet Legends. Twice as many levels and twice as many character classes as Legends. Some new button combos liven up the combat. It sucks that there are no more Gauntlet games after this (THAT POS SEVEN SORROWS DOESN'T COUNT) plus Midway has gone bankrupt, so we'll probably never see another entry in the series. I need to pickup Gauntlet IV next.

Aliens Resurrection (PS1) -- I don't normally like auto-aim in FPSs, but man does this game need some kind of aim assist. This may be the best example of just how awful the Dualshock's analog sticks are. It's impossible to hit all these fast moving, hard-to-see creatures jumping all over the screen and attacking you from the ceiling. I guess this supports the mouse, so I will have to try that. Because it's almost unplayable with a PSX controller. Shame, because the atmosphere and audio design are amazing. This came out at the end of the PS1's lifespan, and it really pushes the system graphically.
