Yeah I'm not going back to NCAA either. I watched a lot of football during the bowl season and I really paid attention to the little things. I realized just how bad EA football games are in comparison. Put Xcom in my PS3 slot and I never looked back. I also heard that there are different final outcomes depending on how you progress through the game. That gives this game a lot of replayability. I'm loving how alien contact goes hand in hand with scientific research and engineering projects. This game is beautiful.

This game is beautiful. I love it so much. I've always been a fan of turn based strategy games but since I'm not a PC gamer I rarely get a chance to play a good one. So happy this is out on consoles. Definitely my GOTY for 2012. My favorite class is a Sniper on high ground with Squadsight, Damn Good Ground, Opportunist and Double Tap.

I also have a question. I'm playing my first game on normal and have already lost a few countries from the XCOM counsil before I got the knack of stacking my engineering projects on top of each other and getting my Sat Uplinks up and going. Is there a way to play through this game without losing a single nation from the counsil?

      LOVE THIS GAME!!!!

Thanks for all of the Impressions guys. Played the demo the other night and it was great. This is going to be a buy for me real soon. Now I just need to decide if I pick up this or Dishonored first.

Anyone try out the new Second Wave settings included in the patch last night? Sounds like some cool game modifiers!

            LINK

Today marks the announcement and release of XCOM's second batch of DLC, "Second Wave," on all available platforms. The new content comes via a free update, adding multiple new options designed to appeal to players looking for a new and different challenge. Specifically, the update adds a new menu of options that significantly alter the way XCOM is played.

            ...

Some options are available immediately to new players, while others are unlocked by completing the game at different difficulty levels. Again, The Second Wave is available today on Xbox, PS3 and PC, so get to cracking some alien skulls. See the full list of new options below.
            • Damage Roulette: Weapons have a wider range of damage.
            • New Economy: Randomized council member funding.
            • Not Created Equally: Rookies will have random starting stats.
            • Hidden Potential: As a soldier is promoted, stats increase randomly.
            • Red Fog: Combat wounds will degrade the soldier's mission stats.
            • Absolutely Critical: A flanking shot guarantees a critical hit.
            • The Greater Good: Psionics can only be learned from interrogating a psionic alien.
            • Marathon: The game takes considerably longer to complete.
            • Results Driven: A country offers less funding as its panic level increases.
            • High Stakes: Random rewards for stopping alien abductions.
            • Diminishing Returns: Increased cost of satellite construction.
            • More Than Human: The psionic gift is extremely rare.

              Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

As our own Owen Good recounted in his argument for why it should be our game of the year, sometimes it will inspire you to name a character after a friend and, after he or she dies, to mourn.

A well-meaning fan had a similar reaction upon losing a character named after XCOM designer Jake Solomon, and went the whole nine yards with the grieving process. The player sent Solomon a couple of letters and some custom dogtags. The letters were addressed to "Mrs. Jacob Solomon," as is normally the method of notifying one's next of kin. Solomon tweeted an image of the letters last week, saying how cool he thought the idea was. (That's not Solomon's home address; that's Firaxis HQ.)

A touching tribute from a fan, sure, but one could perhaps understand how Solomon's wife, to whom the letter was addressed, might find the whole thing a little weird. In a (very good) interview with PC Gamer, Solomon recounts how the gift was received.

Well, I thought it was awesome. Somebody went to the trouble to make dog tags for me, so I thought it was awesome. It's funny, because it sounds like I'm joking, but I'm not. My wife was really disturbed by it, because at first I didn't understand what it was. I got these two letters, both of which were addressed to my wife, to "Mrs. Jacob Solomon." And I'm like, "What the hell? Who's writing my wife?" But then I realized what it was. "Oh, wait a minute, this is a notification of death letter. Oh my god, this is so awesome." I didn't want to read it. I wanted my wife to read it. But my wife was truly… I'm not saying this as an exaggeration. My wife was disturbed by this. She was very disturbed. Obviously she's not as tied in to XCOM as I am.

Solomon goes on to say that while he still feels the letter was awesome, his wife was truly weirded out by receiving a letter describing her husband's death, so much so that he now keeps it at work. "I had to take it to the office," he says, "because she hated even having that kind of stuff in the house."

                    Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Playing on default Normal difficulty and this game is presenting a step challenge since I am trying to go through with minimal casualties. My next playthrough will be on Normal/Ironman and I'm gonna name my soldiers after ppl I know. I'm actually thinking about starting over, but I've got plasma weapons and good armor so I'm just gonna finish the game on default Normal.

Guys what advice can you give on building facilities? Do you build them on top of each other or next to each other for the bonues? Also which ones do you try and build first? Right now I'm building workshops for more engineers, then power supplies, then Sat Uplinks. I'm just wondering if there is a better approach.

Uplinks, power supply until I can build a thermo. I don't worry about engineers because you can always do missions to get them.

                          Yep.

                          My strategy is as follows:

Launch as many satellites as possible as fast as possible. I focus on locking up an entire region.

Get to carpace armor as fast as possible. Then the others, but carpace is a must, you can hold you own with that armor for a long time.

Get to laser weapons and plasma weapons as fast as possible.

Don't ever waste money on laser or plasma pistols.

Give Assault class soldiers rifles. Shotguns have too limited of range.

Snipers stay in the back. Usually I roll with 2 of them, have one on each side in the back.

Assault and support are my front line troops. One on each side like the snipers.

                          Heavies run up the middle.

Which brings me to another thing, unlock 6 people squads as quick as possible. This way I roll with 2 snipers, 2 heavies, 1 assault, 1 support.

That's a nice strategy. Unfortunately I've already wasted money on pistol research. I've also had some bad luck with getting heavies. The only one I've had since I started playing the game is the original one I got from the first mission or so. Every soldier I've trained since then has yet to be given the Heavy class. I had a chance to get another one on a panic response mission but chose a city with 4 engineers instead. I hate passing up engineers.

I also gave the Skeleton armor to my sniper. Comes in handy when I need a good vantage point, but the weakness is that usually when you use the grappling hook to climb to a better spot there usually won't be much cover there. I did that on one mission when I climbed on the top of an 18 wheeler cab. Killed about 4 aliens from up there but I almost lost my sniper in the process to a squad of Muton troops. Those bastards work really well in groups!

My team as of right now is 1 Heavy, 2 Assault, 2 Support (both with advanced healing abilities), and one sniper.

Another question regarding Interceptors. As of now I have mine equipped with Laser Cannons with Dodge and Aim capabilities. I usually shoot down medium and small UFOs with ease. Is there any benefit to upgrading to the advanced Interceptor later on in the game?

The newest patch kills the Mods. Seems to use the MODS right now you have to install it then play with STEAM offline. Otherwise STEAM auto updates the game replacing some of the MOD files. Still looking into it.

                                YES......

High ground is cool and all, but not necessary if your sniper has squad sight. And once your sniper has IN THE ZONE ability, they become BEASTS from anywhere.
