    Dead Space 3

Posted this in the Dead Space 2 thread but might as well make a thread for it

EA confirms new Dead Space game

Electronic Arts has confirmed that a new Dead Space is in the works, following months of rumors concerning Dead Space 3. The publisher told Game Informer that it will have more details during E3. All we know for sure is that we'll see it some time over the next year, between now and March 31 or 2013.

There are many rumored details concerning Dead Space 3. Speculation suggests it will be set on an ice planet called Tau Volantis, with Isaac undertaking a rescue mission while on the run from authorities. A new character, Shadow Isaac, will act as the protagonist's mocking split personality. Y'know, because he's crazy.

In any case, Dead Space is easily among my top franchises of recent years, so I can't wait to find out more.

Getting Scared With a Friend: Dead Space 3 May Have Co-Op

EA recently confirmed Dead Space 3. So there's that.

More germane to our headline, though, is an anonymously-sourced IGN report / rumor that has the game featuring drop-in / drop-out co-op, which would be a first for the series.

It seems the dropping-in/out co-op partner may not be corporeal, strictly speaking, as IGN writes, "The cooperative mode mirrors the single-player campaign, but Isaac's story changes to accommodate it. At one point in Dead Space 3, Isaac and his counterpart stumble, wounded, bloody, and missing chunks of armor, out of burnt wreckage together. In single-player, the same scene happens without the other character. While Isaac may have a psychological breakdown and experience hallucinations on his own, certain traumatic events don't occur with someone by his side."

    Hm.

    Other bits of co-op relevance:

Players will also work together (using telekinesis, for instance) to interact with pieces of the environment. In addition, you'll be able to share ammo with and heal your co-op partner, although there is no revive system — once someone's down and dead, both players reload the last checkpoint.

That's not the only posited change to the Dead Space formula. IGN also alludes to a "desolate snow planet" (Tau Volantis?) as, at least, a piece of the game's setting. The lack of visibility via white-out conditions would seem to approximate the scare-potential of darkness.

Then there's the alleged new enemies:

For the first time in the franchise, he'll fight human beings. Heavily armored soldiers pack guns and grenades to use against you. Of course, these guys become Necromorphs as well.

Skyscraper-sized enemies may also come into play. During one scene, Isaac observes a massive worm-like beast bursting from the ice beneath a cliff.

For more, check out the post on IGN.

Also of Note: On the same earnings call in which EA confirmed Dead Space 3, Peter Moore also confirmed a new Need for Speed game. Additionally, Mr. Moore said, "in the months ahead you can count on new iterations of PopCap franchises like Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies."

Awesome stuff... coop could be real fun. I also like the addition of combat roles and cover. If any series can pull off being action-packed but still scary as ****, it's this one.

Can't wait to see some footage.

Co-op...ugh. Hope this doesn't go the way of RE5.

The article states it's drop-in, drop-out... so my guess is, when playing alone, there isn't anyone else there with you. It sounds like they just add another character on screen if someone else plays with you.

Not sure how I feel about the fighting humans part. I would honestly rather see new forms of necromorphs than human enemies. Seems like the game might be moving further towards the action side of things and away from horror. There is nothing scary about fighting humans, even if they become necromorphs later. I would still obviously expect Necromorphs to make up the majority of enemies, but fighting humans even as a secondary enemy doesn't seem to fit with the tone of the franchise.

              Game Informer Details
              • Co-op confirmed
              • No competitive multiplayer
              • Now has universal ammo pickups
              • Cover system added
              • Unitologists pose a threat now, the screens look like they're shooting at Isaac while he's taking cover.
              • Co-Op will add new cutscenes and interactions between Isaac and Carver, "if you play single player you'll hear everything you need to hear to get the whole story."
              • "Dead Space 3 will have zero gravity space sections, dark corridors, and all the other things that made the series what it is"

              • New Necromorphs called Fodder, Feeders & something Visceral internally calls 'The Snow Beast' plus a huge 30 story tall centipede necromorph called the Nexus.
              • Feeders are "what happens when a human isn't actually infected by a Swarm or by a Divider head, but by necessity ends up eating the flesh of a turned Necromorph"
              • Icy Planet is called Tau Volantis,
              • Fodder transform into two different Necromorphs depending on how you kill them
              • Ammo drops are more plentiful
              • They want DS3 to be less linear than 2&1; be able to explore large environments and find "unique beta missions" that aren't required to complete the main game
              • You can slap different guns together like a Plasma cutter/Ripper combo, Visceral didn't say "how exactly these weapon mods work" but GI noticed enemies drop Scrap metal and 'Tungsten' now.

              Leaked Screens

I can't help but get Army of Two vibes from this screen.

I hope they didn't mess up an excellent franchise because I question some these things their trying with DS3.

My issues are the universal and plentiful ammo, cover system, and enemies that have guns too. That's not survival horror. D1 offered what RE5 didn't, and while D2 was more action-y, it didn't completely jump the shark. Still interested in the game, just not exactly thrilled at the some of the changes to appeal to the masses.

I like the idea of having a survival horror with a co-op partner, but it's also is able to fulfill people who don't want to play with a partner. Some of these screens and game decisions aren't really pointing in that direction though...

An occasional enemy with a gun is ok, but you're right if you have a cover system and all the bad guys have guns its not survival horror.

I will be playing this title alone. It's much scarier that way. Once I complete it than I will miess around in coop.

I love scary games, and I dont want to cheat myself from it by playing coop. I want to be alone in a dark room with surround sound. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dead Space 3 Release Date Announced

EA has announced that Dead Space 3 will come out for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Europe on February 8th and in the US on February 5th.

Visceral also took to the stage at EA's press conference to reveal that weapons crafting, one of the most requested features, will appear in the franchise's third installment. Isaac will scavenge for materials and be able to make new instruments of death at workbenches. Imagine a rivet chain-gun combined with a grenade launcher or a plasma gun combined with a scope. All the better to kill necromorphs with.

                              IGN

A lot of people have worried that co-op will ruin the sense of horror and isolation in the first two games, and it does, but to me that’s an excellent improvement on what was a dim and shallow foundation. The most interesting parts of the demo to me were the fantastic sequences where we noticed that what was happening on my screen and your screen weren’t actually the same thing.

Midway through the demo there’s a cluttered room with an elevator we were supposed to go down. In my game there were a pile of toy soldiers by the elevator door, but in your game they weren’t there. Playing online, neither of us would know what the other is seeing and we’d just have to go on faith we’re seeing the same thing.

Later in the level, my character Carver went into a full hallucination where it appeared I’d been sucked into a hellish corridor and had to chase a mysterious character to the end. On your screen I was just scrambling around a cold metal hallway, surrounded by Necromorphs that weren’t visible in my hallucination but you had to kill them to keep me alive.
This one-sided madness does kill the scares -- or at least mute them -- but it opens both players up to a wide range of different emotions. I almost wonder if the inconsistency and communication breakdowns that will inevitably come from Carver’s craziness will drive players into an “enjoyable anger.” An argument that dissolves into shouting that reflects Isaac’s frustration and helplessness trying to protect his partner.
                              VG247

In addition to Carver, a longer campaign, a deeper story and co-op, Dead Space 3 also has thousands of crafting combinations. We weren’t able to try crafting for ourselves, but we did gather up a great deal of resources strewn across the environment.

Both Carver and Isaac have scavanger bots that can be deployed in hotspots – areas with strong signal strength – and then let loose to automatically scan for component parts. These elements are then automatically made available to you at the next upgrade workbench.

When in co-op, both players receive any new weapons made, ensuring both parties get a share in the spoils.
                              Polygon

What are the markers doing? Where do they come from? What's their purpose? Where do the Necromorphs come from? What is going on is what we answer here. There are a few big twists to get there, but we answer as much of that as we possibly can, without leaving nothing to the imagination. Huge chunks of lore are explained in Dead Space 3."
