    Re: Cyberpunk 2077

I'm dodging this thread and Reddit for Cyberpunk due to the toxic levels increasing, lol.

Overall, the reviews have been great. It'll be a little buggy, but it looks like it'll be a blast!

      Re: Cyberpunk 2077

most anticipated game in a long time for me but I'll have to wait due to the lockdown I've mentioned a few times - the ONLY thing that worries me about not liking it is my unpopular opinion of the witcher.

It was on gamepass and I didn't even remotely like it - I thought the movement and combat sucked and given it's the same developer and I wanted nothing to do with the witcher beyond my first 20min ...

On the other hand, Blade Runner is my favourite movie of all time and I see all the sci-fi nods in the various media released. The plastic stripper outfit, the makeup just like daryl hanna (black eyes), the city scape and advertising, the flying police car, they even merged some other movie characters I see with a bit of mad max, you have some minority report in there, one character even reminded me of van damme's cyborg film! On that level this game I feel like was built for me, so I just hope the gameplay jives me with as well because the witcher didn't at all.

The impressions/reviews for this game are insufferable at this point. Actual game discussion is buried and the lead is all political talk. I'm looking to read about a highly anticipated video game, not a treatise on culture and gender from NPR or university.

Couldn't agree more. One review i saw spent at least a 3rd of it talking about the representation of Trans people in the game. I really don't understand it. All good if they are in the game and fit the narrative, but do we really need to beat up developers about how/who they put in their FICTION? Unreal.

If the game actually represents character creation the way some of these reviews are reading - its easily understandable and certainly head-scratching on their decision making.

Do you mean the Genital selection size or whatever? It seems like that was put in so people can make any character they want? Maybe its something I missed.

The combinations of genitals, bodies, and voices from my understanding. And the pronoun selection is based on the "gender" of the voice selected. Just seems weird and not well thought out, but certainly something the game banks on throughout according to these reviews.

If this was only being talked about in one or two reviews then that is certainly creating a bigger issue, but if the implementation is as described and being mentioned in almost every review published? Seems legitimate to me.

I read that polygon review (I think?) where the reviewer is trans - but I still don't agree - what would you/polygon have them do? They allowed a character to be trans probably for the first time ever in a game (or maybe that is wide-spread) and it only serves to be a point of contention in the end. The reviewer and you? are saying 'why would they do that' and 'why not have a non-gender identifying voice' ... ? ... Or perhaps the review wanted them to leave the gender ambiguous even though they paid for voice-actors to do male and female voiceovers, not to mention the way each NPC needs to be coded to deal with the character selection.

I don't see any valid criticism here. They didn't set out to make a AAA action RPG that is 100% politically correct - why the blow-back? The complaints are as if the gender issue should have been the starting off point for the game development and design, but in reality it's simply an option that I'd wager is an off-shoot of the traditional male/female character selection screen most rpg's have at the beginning. This is a work of fiction, not an effort to appease and uplift a group of people in real life. Not to mention the ethical status of all of this isn't settled anyway. There are lots of people who don't buy into a gender-neutral, non-binary view of things.

Nothing can be all things to all people and I certainly don't think there should be an onus on entertainment companies to try to go that route either.

Are we collectively scathing 2k for not including a non-binary option? I don't think so.

                      Re: Cyberpunk 2077

I think the easiest solution, at this stage, is to allow the gamer to customize their character however they wanted including the assigning of a "gender." It is my understanding they chose to use the character's voice choice as the defining trait for the character's gender.

I think the point on contention/criticism (these are reviews and impressions after all) here is the poor implementation of choices and not being well thought out. Instead, it sounds like they hedged their bets on allowing you to create whatever character you wanted, but still pigeon holed you into two binary choices. Just seems like a weird thing to push a created character into when the process tries to account for much more.

As I said - if this was the only part of the game that addressed this then I doubt we would be seeing this in nearly every review. From the Polgyon review it seems the game world includes and banks on these ambiguous sexual identities without actually including legitimate characters. I find that odd personally.

To me, its very easy to escape criticism hiding behind the, "well, its just a game" excuse.

My game arrives from Amazon Thursday.

I simply cannot wait to dive into this universe and just have a great time with it.

I am probably going to avoid this thread till after I have completed the game and will give my full impressions of my time with it.

I expect it to be extremely high quality story telling in a cyberpunk universe.

FWIW, my Best Buy order shipped out earlier today. Idk about an email as I'm avoiding that in case a family member buys a Christmas gift with my account, but I had pre-ordered this awhile ago and set it to text me with updates and I received a text around noon saying it had shipped.

Welp, I had been planning to wait until upgrading to a Series X to get this, but gave in and just preordered the PS4 version. I don't know if I will play it right at launch (may want to wait to see how the Day 1 patch cleans the game up before diving in), but couldn't resist. I've had my eye on this game since the original trailer 7 years ago. The launch trailer sold me on it.
