Re: Gears of War: Judgment
Gears of War: Judgment writers on what makes the series special and how to improve it
In the past, the Gears of War series hasn't been particularly lauded for its writing.
Dead Space story producer Chuck Beaver called it, "literally the worst writing in games," and Gears of War 3 scribe Karen Traviss didn't instil much confidence when she called herself "a writer who doesn't read novels."
Epic Games seems to have taken these criticisms to heart and has brought on Extra Lives: Why Videogames Matter author and New Yorker contributor Tom Bissell along with his writing partner Rob Auten - a consultant at 20th Century Fox who worked on Avatar - to pen the upcoming prequel Gears of War: Judgment.
Thus, the question on everyone's minds is thus; Why Gears? And: What are they going to differently?
I caught up with Bissell and Auten in a phone interview to answer these questions and more. After hearing them discuss this latest collaboration, it's become clear that this is a radically different beast than the bombastic slaughterfest we're used to, even if it still contains chainsaw sodomy.Last edited by Flawless; 08-30-2012, 02:55 PM.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Gears of War: Judgment
Cliff Bleszinski Departs Epic
Today we are saying farewell with warm regards to Cliff Bleszinski, who is departing as Epic’s design director to chart the next stage of his career. During the past two decades, Cliff has helped shape many successful games that have captured the imaginations of millions of players around the world. We are grateful for his influence on Epic’s legacy, from the wild adventures “Jazz Jackrabbit” to the visceral combat of “Gears of War.”
Said Tim Sweeney, Epic’s founder, CEO and technical director, “In 20 wonderful years with Epic, Cliff Bleszinski has grown into a true design luminary, and his contributions to the ‘Unreal’ and ‘Gears’ series have helped shape the game industry into what it is today. Cliff leaves Epic with our gratitude for his many contributions, and our wishes for continued success in the next chapter of his life!”
“In my 10 years of working with Cliff, his passion for creating video games of the highest quality has been unflinching. We are grateful for all of his hard work, and remain committed to making our fans happy and to always raising the bar in everything we do at Epic,” said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps.
“Cliff has been my friend and business associate for the past 20 years and, while it is sad to see him move on from Epic, I know that everyone here has benefitted greatly from his passion for gaming and the depth of his expertise and experience,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic. “I’ll miss watching his star shine from such a close vantage point but I’ll still look forward to watching his continued success.”
We would also like to share an excerpt from Cliff’s personal note to his colleagues:
I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop. I literally grew up in this business, as Mike likes to say. And now that I’m grown up, it’s time for a much needed break.
I will miss the projects, the playtests, the debates, and most importantly, the people. Epic only hires the best of the best, and it has been a joy working with each and every one of you on a daily basis, whether you were hired weeks ago or decades ago. I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with a variety of disciplines, from code to art to marketing and PR – it’s been one big, rewarding learning experience. I’m confident that each project that is being built, whether at Epic, Chair, PCF, or Impossible will be top notch and will please gamers and critics alike.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

WOW I can't stand all the stuff popping up and taking up space on the screen. Way to much blocking the screen for my liking.Comment

Gears of War: Judgment's Campaign Will Break You
Really, the only way Gears of War Judgment is the same as previous games – core mechanics aside – is in the way its cast interacts. There’s some smart, funny writing behind the characters in Kilo Squad, and it comes through in the way they tease, mock, or outright dislike each other. The witty banter between these characters is exactly what you’d expect out of Marcus and Dom, which speaks volumes about how well this cast – whether they’re old friends or new – will carry its story.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 12-12-2012, 12:04 PM.Comment

Notes:
- In MP (at the very least, FFA), you can spawn with a shotgun, or a rifle, but not both.
- Grenades now have a dedicated button to throwing them
- Stopping power is gone
- You can use a primary weapon with the Boomshield
- In FFA, there is no downing, and thusly no self-revive or executions
- There are two new COG weapons: a semi-auto sniper-like weapon (Markza?) and a grenade launcher (Booshka)?
- There is a new Locust sniper-like weapon
- Sawed-Off Shotgun, in campaign at the very least, has two shots per roundComment

Re: Gears of War: Judgment
Great, back to the visceral gunfights. I just bought Gears 3 and I cant STAND fighting lambent. The exploding enemies look extremely corny to me. I hope I dont have to fight these garbage designed enemies for the whole Gears 3 campaign do I?
Someone please tell me that the lambent are only on that first boat stage. If so I might be able to suffer through it to get back to the rawness.Comment
