I fail to see how Mass Effect has an "awesome button," along with Dark Souls, Skyrim, Fallout 3, KOTOR and pretty much every other RPG that has been released in the last decade.
All those games you mentioned besides DAO and KotOR have action gameplay with RPG 'elements'. (Dark Souls being the one with actually good action gameplay) They're hybrids. They rely on YOUR reflexes/twitch gaming skills (like action games) not just your characters abilities/skills/stats and dice rolls.

DOA was not terrible tactics wise (for a modern RPG, that is) Still had alot of undesirable mechanics though. (cooldowns, characters getting knocked unconscious instead of dying when HP reached 0, health/mana regeneration, MMO mechanics like 'aggro'...) I had to play on nightmare and use some house rules to get a semi decent experience out of it (not take any healing spells, not use overpowered items/spells (cone of cold anyone?), reload when a party member 'went down', not take specializations... You get the picture.

KotORs combat was so simplified and easy coming from BG, you could literally sleepwalk through the combats. Not tactical at all. I kept looking back in the options to make sure I wasn't on easy, only to find out it was on hard, like I though I had set it on.

What you're describing isn't an RPG.

What you're describing is a board game with graphics.

I know this is a sports site and you guys might be a little confused, but...

What was the original and grandaddy of RPGs ? D&D

Which video games were closest to that ? The ones I'm describing. Thank you.

Yeah, I tend to prefer games where I'm more in control, not just purely at the mercy of invisible dice.

Then again, I've never played D&D and other dice games, so that may be a reason why I'm not into that type of thing as much.

            Re: Bioware co-founders step down

Maybe for the sake of this argument we need two different categories.

            RPGs (Role-Playing Games)
            RPVGs (Role-Playing Videogames)

It seems bakan wants a visual representation to what is normally done on boards or paper, while others enjoy stepping into the "role" of your character in the game and actually have control over what you do based on your input and controls.

I want that extra control, I don't want to be at the mercy of dice rolls or whatever else comes with that. I like having to improve my character to gain powers and make them better to use. Even if I have control of my character there are still the behind the scenes "dice rolls" that effect accuracy, how much damage you do, how much damage is taken, and all of that stuff.

              Re: Bioware co-founders step down

There are already categories for them.

RPGs - Traditional/classic stlyle RPGs like I was describing

ARPGs - Action RPGs (the hybrids we know of today)

The problem with most all ARPGs is that the gameplay isn't as good as a pure action game and the RPG elements are watered down/simplified compared to traditional RPGs. They're trying to do both and please everybody but they end up being caught in this 'middle ground' area of not really doing either aspect that great. You know how the sayings goes... "The key to failure is trying to please everybody"..."Jack of all trades, master of none"

It almost feels like the (bad) RPG mechanics are sort of an excuse for the bad combat and vice versa. The standard of combat isn't very high in ARPGs, but on the other hand there are rarely deep RPG mechanics in ARPGs either.

EA ruined Bioware.... They had two fantastic games in Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origins, then EA got their hands on Bioware and turned the remaining Mass Effect games into the least rpgish rpg I have ever played.... Really they were pitiful compared to the first one..... And that is when Bioware died, when you saw the EA logo on the box.

I actually thought ME2 was the best of the series and ME3 outside of the ending was an amazing game. DA2 wasn't very good, the story was terrible.

Original does not mean only. Doom was the original FPS and that style of gameplay is a relic now. Things evolve and improve, that's how the world works. You may be upset that things haven't gone the way you want them but to suggest that that means current RPGs aren't really RPGs is ridiculous.

Yea, cause everything is always getting better and better !! Just like in other forms of entertainment.

We have actually gone backwards in many other areas due to the graphics race and skyrocketing production costs.

The stories are engrossing, the gameplay is amazing, the soundtracks are awesome, and due to increased visual fidelity, there are better environments.

That seems like quite an improvement.

I figured that this thread would turn into a pissing match between RPG camps, with some shots taken at EA for good measure. No matter, I love all kinds of RPG's, so with Obsidian's Kickstarter Project releasing in a couple of years, I'll be able to enjoy an old school RPG, as well as a new hybrid game in Dragon Age III: Inquisition. Enjoy retirement Bio Docs.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I completely disagree. If you miss extremely dated games, there are plenty of them out there for you to play.
