I got them down to just 3 health when I got taken out. It was by far my best ship yet, and it's the furthest I've gotten, but still only my #2 score somehow.
Make sure to upgrade your doors. I had level 3 blast doors and that robot was stuck in a system-less room and I managed to take out their drone control so he was never a threat. Or if you have any Mantis on your ship, send them to fight him.

Also train yourself to ID which weapons he has. Teleport your crew to take out the missiles first. Your shield should be able to handle most of the ion/laser weapons and the drones.

Some guys in this thread have some good advice on things you should do first.

But, I also think you learn as you go. You can't really win the game your first couple of times. Part of the game is losing because each time you develop experience (personal experience) and will get farther just from that experience. And as you get farther, you get better ships; ships that will make it easier to reach the end.

        Re: FTL: Faster Than Light

I watched a youtube video of a guy playing and probably learned too much. It wasn't anything cheap or tricky, pretty much just straightforward, but I would have probably appreciated figuring stuff out on my own more.

I actually beat it my first playthrough, if that tells you how much it taught me, though I got really lucky in my encounters. I'm actually 3 for 7, one being the starting ship, one playing through the federation ship and then one playing through the federation to unlock B type.

Thinking about picking this up, although I have pretty much no clue what i'm getting myself into. Is it basically just a hardcore space simulator? Does it follow a story where your goal is to defeat a big bad or something?

Not hardcore at all. It's so simple, yet so brilliant at the same time. You do try to defeat the bad guy at the end, but everything up until that point is random so you'll never play it the exact same twice. I'd watch a couple Youtube videos on it and see if it's your thing. I wasn't sure about it when I bought it, but I've probably played it 5-10 hours already the few days that I've had it.

If you do decide to get it, do it through the developers site that way you get a steam free copy as well.

Thanks man. I think i'll grab this. Even if it's not my cup of tea, $7 isn't anything i'll be upset about spending regardless.

Man, i've got a lot to learn. Played my first time on Easy and made it through to the end, but died before the last battle due to running out of rockets. Not good planning on my part.

Tried another playthrough on normal and managed to die in the second sector . I chose to fight a much more well armed opponent instead of choosing to flee, and it cost me. Had my ship blown to pieces.

                  Can't wait to try again!

How much of each sector do you guys explore? I'm in the middle of another play through right now, and exploring as much as possible before the fleet gets to me. I've noticed how much faster I've upgraded systems, but I'm worried I'll run into a well armed enemy and die a swift death.

At first when I was learning I tried to get to the exit quickly, but since then I've started exploring as much as I possibly can so that I can get enough scrap and crew members to be prepared for the flagship. Still haven't beat it after like 15 tries, all on easy!

It's amazing how fast an hour passes playing this game.

Explore as much as you can, especially in the beginning. It's when you rush that you get up against overpowering enemies and get decimated. You can start fleeing/rushing later when enemies get large shields and weapons that can bypass shields to do large amounts of costly hull damage.

Second time I've been wiped by them boarding my ship and systematically killing all of my crew. Still trying to devise a sound strategy to combat that, but haven't had any luck. How useful is the drone that attacks anyone who boards your ship?

                            I heart drones.

Air locks are your friend, good for fires and enemies.

Upgraded bulkheads, then expose them to space. It helps if you can expose the rooms around them as well. They might get through your doors to a critical area eventually, but by then they will be on their last legs. Alternatively, if you have a couple mantis, set them to attack, run off to heal, send them back to attack. It works pretty well, maybe even better than the doors overall, the doors and lack of oxygen are easier to manage though.

I'm not a huge fan of drones, they are expensive, use a lot of power, and to make good use of them you really need the drone recovery arm that takes up a valuable augmentation slot. Like most things they probably have good uses, I just find good old weapons and shields/cloak to be the better buy.
