I looked at these games as a nod to the old days.

It's about the game being seperated from all the other cookie cutter games and having a little place in gaming all to itself.
Adding an easier level just makes it another game with easier and harder settings.
I'll still grab it eventually though.

      Re: Dark Souls II

I think what is really worrying for most of us is that if Dark Souls ll adds difficulty levels, gives us maps, etc. it loses the identity that all of us love. The problem with that, is that if they decide to add a few easier modes, that means the game won't be entirely built around the idea that they need to make it as difficult as possible while still being fair (which is a balance that Dark Souls struck more than any other game I've ever played).

We'll see how it goes, but if they are really turning this into an Elder Scrolls franchise (which I love), then the Souls franchise may be in danger of losing the same fan base that made it popular in the first place.

Well said. This franchise was so unique. I hope that the community rises up and makes their voices heard about it.

          I can hear it now:

          >"I beat Dark Souls II!"
<"Did you beat it on easy or classic difficulty?"
          >"Easy."
<"Then you didn't really beat it."

I never finished Dark Souls and Demon's Souls was one of my favorite games. I really hate the parts of the game that automatically poison you and whatnot. The game is already hard enough and those areas sucked the fun out of it for me eventually. I really should finish it though - I recognize it's brilliance.

I'll buy it but the games aren't overly difficult. Exception of the tandem boss fight, some spotty hit detection, if your good at picking up timings, it really isn't all that difficult. Than again, if your not a patient person I can see where problems would crop up.

Oy, Ornstein and fatty Smough just about made me quit. I'm glad I didn't but that boss fight had be going for forever.

This thread reminds me of indie music fans...

They love the bands until they get signed to a major label then they boycott because the band has "sold out"...

I highly doubt they'd screw up the core experience for what people want...this is just about adding something a little easier to make it more approachable to people who have skipped so far.

Don't get me wrong, I sort of in a weird way enjoy the hard difficulty. I just really don't have time at this point in my life to possilbly waste 4 hours and get nothing out of it. For those that enjoy that more power to you.

I'm with you....I enjoy the concept, but don't have the time...

My point was more that it makes sense for the 3rd in the series to offer more options, but they won't be killing what sold them games for the hardcore.

This is an ongoing trend in gaming though; developers try to widen their audience and usually it ends up with the core base of fans rejecting the changes as too radical, and the persons they tried to lure in are either too few in number, or don't think the adjustments went far enough in scope to justify them buying into the brand. Which will leave you with a game with negative/mixed reviews from gamers.

That I could understand. I wish there was a way for them to have a different difficulty setting without sacrificing the brutal challenge the rest of us enjoy. The best thing for them to do would be to create an easier difficulty that bulks up a players stats a ton. Then, maybe add a map or something on that difficulty level as well.
