Re: The Evil Within
Too many games. Ugh.
I have heard a lot of good impressions for this. Here is a few from NeoGAF user....symphonask
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=893324
So I got the chance to play The Evil Within's mansion level at an event held in a Game store in London. I played for around an hour and a half and beat the level on both Casual and Survival difficulties. Survival is the normal difficulty level. There are two above it that were locked out - Nightmare and Akumu.
Controls - First thing I did when I got my hands on it was to get a feel for the controls. Aiming is weighty - the reason you don't have a laser pointer for a reticule in this game is because the reticule is dynamic. Think Counter-Strike - when your moving and panning the camera around the reticule is spread out - stop and keep it steady, the reticule is smaller and you are more accurate. Coupled with the weighty aiming, this makes the gunplay less snappy than the likes of an RE4. But that's a good thing. If RE4 skewed a little bit towards the action spectrum in the survival horror genre, then the Evil Within skews towards a more tactical, survival-based approach. A lot of the time you don't want to take enemies on head-on.
Ammo is scarce. If you are not using your resources carefully, you will run out of ammo. The game isn't afraid to throw multiple enemies at you even if you have next to no ammo.
The game is challenging. You do not want to be in close proximity to an enemy with only a few rounds left in your pistol. I tended to run back and aim from midrange. Multiple enemies can overwhelm you very quickly. In this game, more so than in RE4, you will need to make use of every available resource in a gunfight. For example, I had the unfortunate luck of facing 4-5 enemies in a single room. Taking out one guy with a few well placed headshots with the pistol alerted all his friends in the same room. In this game you can't shoot one of them in leg then run up and do a roundhouse kick in the face of three guys in front of you. After the first guy was down, another was coming really quickly towards me from the doorway I shot his friend from. Precise, time consuming aiming with the pistol was no an option here - too much risk if I missed. I switched to my shotgun. I blew the enemy's head off as he was two feet away from me. I then very quickly switched to my explosive crossbow bolt and shot one of the remaining two enemies who were further back. Both thankfully exploded in satisfying chunks of gore. What makes these encounters so exhilarating is that had I missed the first few shots with my pistol, the encounter would have gone very poorly or I would have run out of ammo very quickly.
There is no go-to weapon here. No ideal way to dispatch a group of enemies every time. Every encounter, I had to stop and think, plan ahead on my next moves. Because once a group of enemies are alerted to your presence in a room, you have to react quickly on instinct and make decisions on which weapons to conserve and which you can afford to use in this encounter - because the next one might require it more.
Playing through the level multiple times, I really appreciated the occasional random enemy placements. There is less trial and-error gameplay, and it keeps you on your toes as there might be a threat behind every door. I also found that it helps replayability a great deal.
The gunplay is satisfying - the tactical decision making you do for tough encounters makes it really satisfying when those decisions pay off.
I won't bore you guys with how great the art in this game looks, or how you can take multiple paths to beat a level because, well you guys can all see it in the long gameplay videos on youtube. I mainly wanted to talk about the mechanics of the game. I loved my time with it. This isn't the next RE4 - this game is if RE4 grew some balls and stopped treating you like an action hero and took pleasure in punishing you, taking away the things you like - your ammo, your snappy aiming, you're paused inventory screen, your unlimited run and so on.
Take it from me, Mikami is back to school designers on a new type of modern TPS.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
Good to see positive impressions. I've had high hopes for this game since it was first shown. Think I will wait a little after release to pick it as I don't have the time right now with life and other games in the way. Definitely a must buy for me though.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
For anyone who buys their games at Best Buy and is interested in -
THE EVIL WITHIN, a free $10 gift card has been added to the game when you pre-order the game. If you're a GCU member, the game would cost $48 plus tax and you'll receive the free gift card in the mail. Overall, the game would cost $38 plus tax once you receive the gift card.
Anyone who buys their games at Best Buy and especially if you're a GCU member, you can save a good amount of money plus if you trade in games at Best Buy, you'll save even more as their trade in values are usually higher than Gamestop's.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
It's so many games I want to play but I'm trying to wait for Black Friday. Problem there is everything comes out damn near at the same time ugh
As far as this game, I've been hyped about it ever since I first saw it. I suck when it comes to horror/survival games though(pretty much a wimp lol). This and Alien I want soooo bad but I know i'll play them a few times and not want to anymore lol.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
Yep. The next couple months are going to be brutal. Have Most of what I want paid for in full. Will probably hit EB in the next couple days to finish paying off the rest.
I would love to be able to not be weak and wait for a while to grab some of these but just isn't happening.
The masterchief collection is a definite but the rest are maybes. If I get any of them it be DA3 and wait for the others for some kind of black Friday deal.Last edited by Candyman5; 09-30-2014, 01:41 AM.PS4 Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/candyman5os

Re: The Evil Within
Anyone who buys at least 5 games (or more) a year should really sign up for Best Buy's gamers club unlocked. I don't even remember the last time I paid for a game using cash before today and today was to buy a gift card so I could pre-order The Evil Within and get my 20% discount and a free $10 gift card in the mail.
Unless the individual gamer collects and keeps games, I don't know why anyone wouldn't sign up for gamers club unlocked. Once I finish Mordor and Evil, I'll trade both of them in. Chances are I'll get at least $40 for each which not only makes me play the games for basically a few dollars due to tax but a lot of times, the game ends up being FREE. Then, I use the credit, the reward certs and the $10 gift card for the November games.
I'm not the biggest Best Buy fan but gamers club unlocked is great for those (like me) who plan on purchasing more than 5 games a year.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
Yeah due to money I got to pick and choose. Lord of the rings, the evil within, dragon age 3, masterchief collection, far cry and Advanced warfare are ones I'm cosodering.
The masterchief collection is a definite but the rest are maybes. If I get any of them it be DA3 and wait for the others for some kind of black Friday deal.
I do now have LBP paid for and after using my coupons for trade ins and discounts I have Dragon Age, Farcry and Mordor paid off.
However I'm canceling Farcry when I go in to GS today to cancel Mordor... after I finish Dragon Age. then will move to the next game.
By then I'll be able to pick those games back up used or a price drop will happen by then.
Just way past having to grab every game at release these days. Will save $ and actually finish more games hopefully lolLast edited by Skyboxer; 09-30-2014, 12:16 PM.Joshua:

Re: The Evil Within
Personally, The Evil Within is my third most wanted game for these remaining three months of 2014 and already have it pre-ordered via Best Buy and just waiting for October 14th. I honestly believe that the game will be better than every survival horror game released since RE 4 and even then, I think that it will be better than RE 4 in terms of pure survival horror as RE 4 was reinvented to be more action based. While I can't play them anymore now, the old school RE games were classics and The Evil Within is going to be what that franchise should have stayed.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
I have 3 other games preordered at the moment and don't want to get back into the habit of paying full retail for games unless I'm dying to have it. Plus, I figure the price will drop between launch and Christmas.

I pre-ordered The Evil Within a few days ago because Best Buy had a free $10 gift card with the pre-order. So, it cost me $48 (plus tax) but will end up costing me $38. The Evil Within is the first game since Knack that I put any cash into which was $40. Only reason was because of the $10 gift card. Otherwise, I would have waited until after I trade in Mordor. Now, I'll eventually trade in Mordor and Evil in November as I get ready for Unity, Rogue and Far Cry 4.
What makes the gamers club unlocked even better is that im more likely to buy games that I want to try but normally wouldn't. Lords of the Fallen and Dragon Age III are two of these games because even if I don't like them, at most, they will cost me $10 in credit or cash depending on how long it takes me to complete the other games I mentioned but the majority of the time, I end up making a few dollars profit after finishing the game.
To me, it's a great deal for those who want to play games and try games that they normally wouldn't because in the end, at the very worse, it's a minimal $10 loss.
Now, if you're a collector and keep the games you buy even after finishing them, then well, it's a completely different story.Comment
