Re: The Evil Within
Played the first chapter and it starts getting crazy about 5 minutes in and you definitely get an RE4 vibe right off the bat. I needed to take a quick break after the 1st chapter. The game has style and uses some cool visual effects to make the game world crazy.
Playing on PC and the port is fine. The game does have black bars because they want the game to have a cinematic feel and limit the FOV.XBL: Countach

Re: The Evil Within
Finished the first two chapters but will be starting over as I was just messing around. Anyway, here's my impression thus far -
I have two negatives thus far. First is the wide screen aspect. It's horrible. It limits the field of view and you can miss button prompts depending on what you have the camera focused on. Sometimes, you'll have to move the camera up to see a prompt. Second is the camera zooming in way to much when aiming. Sorry but these two negatives hurt the game a lot more than help it. It lessens the field of view so much, it feels like im playing on a five inch screen. I know this was done on purpose but it shouldn't have been as to me, it feels cheap in regards to building up tense moments and being surrounded. It's also very frustrating and aggravating. And no, im not interested in a cinematic experience because if that's what I wanted, I would watch a movie as opposed to playing a game. Developers and publishers need to eliminate this crap simply because unlike movies, im NOT WATCHING the game, im PLAYING the game. HUGE difference.
Other than that, The Evil Within truly feels like it could be the best survival horror game since RE 4 and in certain ways, better than RE 4 but they should definitely consider adding a patch to fix these two negatives because they both hurt the game a lot more than help it. At the very least, giving players the option would be welcomed. Playing through the first two chapters, it's simply the wide screen aspect and the zooming in when aiming that gives you that tense paranoid feeling and to me, that's a cheap way out in my opinion.
Sadly, other than that, im enjoying the game and everything in it thus far but those two negatives simply make me scream....WHY??? WHY??? WHY???...ARGH and UGH.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
I played the first 2 stages last night and absolutely loved it. It has a very strong Silent Hill 2 vibe to it. It is great to have old school survivor horror back. It has been a while. I can't wait to dive back in and see where it takes me. Between this and Shadow of Mordor, I will be set for quite some time.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
May be trading this game in to Best Buy tomorrow as im just not enjoying it as much as I should due to the wide screen aspect and the camera zooming in when aiming. I know it was done on purpose but to me, it was a horrible decision. At the very least, there should have been an on/off option for the wide screen aspect and a zooming out option when aiming. The tense feeling you get at times is cheap to me because of these two problems. It's as if they couldn't get the game to feel the way they wanted it to feel without going wide screen and zooming in the camera.
The only other option is for me to set the PS4 at 480p and use the "zoom 1" option on my HDTV which cuts down the black bars to a half a millimeter on both the top and bottom which is great but the subtitles get cut off and yes, I like subtitles in games because you can't always make out what is being said. Also, some of the button commands like when in the inventory screen are cut off. Basically, it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.
Visuals wise at 480p, it's definitely a downgrade but what's funny is that it adds to the atmosphere since it doesn't look as crisp and clear as it would at 1080p.
Decisions, decisions.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
Started The Evil Within from the beginning last night after using the zoom option on my HDTV and adjusting the resolution option from automatic to 480p. This game is too good for me to worry about 1080p and since the frame rate isn't good at all times anyway, the decision was an easy one in the end.
On chapter 3 and I must say the 480p downgrade actually makes the game feel darker and more gloomy. In other words, it's actually a positive.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
is it that bad or are you just finished with it? I've been debating getting this one but I don't have all that much time to play, might be a reduced price buy for me now.Comment

Re: The Evil Within
Hearing nothing but great things about this game. Really don't wanna shell out another 60 bucks, but with comparisons to RE4 it's so hard to say no.Twitter: @TyroneisMaximus
