Re: Wolfenstein - The New Order

I beat this last night (on Uber) and it was one hell of a ride. Not only one of the better single player FPS I've played (especially recently), but one of the better single player campaigns I've played of any game in recent memory.

The gameplay is tight and smooth with a great sense of balance with each encounter. There's a lot of great stealth sections, some massive gun battles, a lot of great dual-wielding moments, and the "boss" battles are utilized better than most games. Sneaking up on an unaware (or even sleeping) Nazi solider is as satisfying as rounding the corner with a machine gun (or shotgun) in each hand and spraying a room full of them until they're all laying on the floor.

The cast of characters are memorable and stay with you even after you turn off the game which is something most games fail to accomplish outside of one or two characters. Here is a handful of characters that serve the story, but are also fairly developed into believable creations. In a genre that features an empty canvas with two hands even the main character is given clear motivations and a full character arc.

Having played this on Uber I utilized the cover system fairly often, but the game was one of the easiest max difficulty games I can remember. Sure, I died on occasion, but none of the sections felt insurmountable to the point of rage quitting and never coming back. Most of the sections feature multiple routes to flank enemies and utilize a fair bit of strategy so you never feel pigeon-holed. Of course the game also features its fair share of corridors to run down guns blazing. Still, there is a sense of accomplishment after finishing the more difficult sections of the game, but more importantly it is a pure joy to play through thanks to the gameplay, characters, and its maps.

Downloading this off of PSN for $9 was the best use of $9 I can ever remember. Hell, even at $60 I would feel completely satisfied and wanting to run through the campaign again for collectibles and the absolute blast of shooting hundreds of Nazis in the head.

I always feel the need to chime in to say that this is one of my favorite games of this entire generation. Such a great experience; story, music, graphics, gameplay, everything.

I love seeing new people enjoying it.

I purchased it on PC (Steam) but so far its been fantastic. Its more sword combat focused but still features the over the top combat similar to Wolf. One thing I was very surprised to see, the game is pretty long. I hit chapter 7 and thought I must be getting 3/4 of the way through......Nope....not even half way. It is 17 chapters long and the game is not easy by any regards once it starts throwing dozens and dozens of enemies at you at one time. Just sheer wild chaos but the fun type.

I highly suggest it, story wise it isn't close to Wolf, but gameplay wise it's close.

Absolutely worth the little bit of money I spent on it and a great suggestion from you guys.

Was very happy when it was announced last week that ID is working on Quake because some thought it was Machine Games.

New Wolfenstein game would be awesome. The Old Blood was solid but The New Order was definitely better. Hoping the sequel follow Order as opposed to Blood.

Definitely good news, hopefully it has a multi-player mode included. The franchise is begging for it.

We can always use more multi-player shooters.

I think Old Blood was designed to be exactly what it ended up being; a super campy alternate timeline take within the alternate timeline that is the Wolfenstein universe. Basically, alternate timeline inception. Lol. It wasn't as good as the main campaign, but I wasn't expecting it to be mostly because that main campaign was so damn good.

I did like climbing walls with that pipe though so hopefully that addition sticks around in some form.

I actually played The Old Blood before The New Order and I fully enjoyed part one but the second part fell off for me due to the main enemy type in the game at that point. I wasn't happy with that decision. Still a good game with a lot of good elements that will almost surely be in the next Wolfenstein game. Enjoyed The New Order a lot more because it didn't have what The Old Blood had in regards to who the enemy was.

I could go either way on the MP aspect. So long as it doesn't affect the quality of the single player campaign then I'm all for it. TNO had a great sense of pacing and balance with its gameplay. Even though the game is basically a corridor shooter the whole campaign the levels are designed with enough freedom (and room) to give enough variety to keep things from being stale.

Been wanting to buy this game digitally for xbox since it came out, but just couldn't pony up $60 for a FPS game no matter the quality. Finally it's on sale on with Games for Gold for $15.
