I haven't played the new Arma games much (2 ran like crap on my pc and haven't even bothered trying 3), but in Operation Flashpoint (earlier game in the series basically) if you picked the higher difficulty, it disabled 3rd person view and was first person only.

Maybe someone that's more familiar with the newer Bohemia games could chime in on how it works.

Seriously, if you guys want a realistic FPS, get on PC and play some Arma or something.
Oh I don't know about that, Rainbow Six games did very well last-gen..

You can play Arma 2 or 3 how you want. First only, 3rd, or on the fly switching. I for one in single player had difficulty on higher and only used 1st person. Now DayZ or Arma 3 online, I use both. If im in a server that 3rd is allowed they have an advantage over me if I dont use it. Now I dont think the perspective dictates realism or tactics. Socom is a good example of a tactic driven 3rd person console shooter.

I will agree though PC is the play ground for realism shooters and realistic online multiplayer. Red Orchestra, RO Rising Storm, Arma 2, Arma 3, Insurgency, and DayZ I know have very active competitive multiplayer.

I think its long over due a console got a couple of these.

Yeah I only played a couple of missions in Dragon Rising. I did play Red River though and enjoyed it alot.

            Man...
I was talking about the REAL Flashpoint

            Not those bs Codemasters games

edit: And I disagree with the 3rd person perspective not effecting the realism, because if you're at the edge of a wall/behind cover...you can just manipulate the camera and be able to see areas you never would realistically. That's the price you pay for being fully covered like that (not being able to see) If you have both that just shatters the realism aspect right there.

That 3rd person cover mode was the main reason (plus the health regen...lol) that the R6 Vegas games were such a fail on a hardcore tactical/realistic shooter level.

Well you've gotta consider the fact that making a game hardcore to the point of being strict will turn off most all gamers. That's not saying anything about this generation either. There is a very small percentage of players that want games like this insanely realistic, while most just want something more realistic and tactical than almost every other shooter without being too brutal.

The best option is multiple difficulty levels. Let those who want a true tactical experience have that on the highest difficulty.

Exactly right, there's a balance between realism and accessibility.. The majority of gamers, even ones here on OS, want a balance not 100% realism just for the sake of realism

And fps view is not totally realistic because the viewpoint is gimped there anyway.

Not only that but when I'm in combat mode I use my sense of smell to hunt my prey and there's no really effective way for these games to convey that and therefor none are realistic at all.

Obviously nothing is gonna be that realistic, it's a game. But as far as my personal tastes go, give me something like OFP/Rogue Spear/GR1 or give me some crazy off the wall stuff like DOOM.

Not a big fan of the 'in between' type military shooters, ect..

                        Yep all for the levels..

One of the main downfalls of games nowadays is the progression towards easy gameplay vs thinking while you play.
It kills me when a game's out for 2 hours and already questions in the thread about being "stuck", "how do I get this" etc...
                        Just my .02

I played Flashpoint to death and still prefer as much realism as I can get.
Wish more games would simply make the game ultra realistic and then have settings to reduce it..

                        Goes across all genres though.
Madden won't ever be that much more "realistic" due to the "Penalties aren't fun" etc.. mentality of devs.

                              According to Ubi

Note: These specs are the ones required for Alpha testing and are not the final PC specs. We are still working on optimizing the game and the launch specs will be lower than the Alpha specs.
