Yeah, for this game I've broken one of my rules about how I handle new non-sports releases and watched quite a bit of gameplay footage (XCOM is more about its gameplay than its story so I'm not as worried about about spoilers). So excited about this game.

I'm playing through Enemy Unknown then Enemy Within. The gameplay is incredible, I'm definitely picking this up after I get through the first two.

You definitely should give the long war mod a run through also (if you haven't yet).

Mod made to make XCOM harder, but also provided new options for the player.

here's an article on what long war is.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a great tactical game from Firaxis games. Its first expansion pack, Enemy Within, added so much amazing content that it made playing the game an entirely new experience. And now there’s a free—yes, free—mod that’s so good it makes the expansion pack feel like a tired retread.

If you haven't played it, you're definitely missing out. Amazing mod.

There are articles out there where the devs praise it and they signed them up for xcom 2 to release mods so should be good.

According to the steam forums there will be a preload (but no date/time given). My guess is sometime tomorrow. Game's about 45 GB so I'm definitely going to need some time.

Edit: My bad, it's not a Tues release, still a week off. Who knows....

                                Eurogamer - Essential

Punishing and precise, Firaxis has created one of the most demanding - and thrilling - strategy games ever.
With an increased focus on random outcomes, you're encouraged to react to surprise breakthroughs. The foundry, for example, has your engineers experimenting with the research you've completed: producing weapons, armour and ammunition that you can't quite predict. Although the cross-section presentation looks familiar, there isn't a pre-determined build order to follow here, and it's all the better for it.
                                ...
Well, XCOM 2 knows about all our old tricks. Typical. As a result, if you spend too long avoiding your responsibilities and allow the aliens to complete whatever it is that they're plotting, it's game over. You don't just lose, they win. You're going to need to reload an earlier save, or if you're playing on Ironman mode (and you totally should be!), it's time to start from scratch. Even typing that forces a grimace.
                                PC Gamer - 94

Just describing the strategic layer doesn’t capture the rhythm of success and setback that makes it so gripping. The game cleverly uses scarcity of opportunity to force you into difficult dilemmas. At any one time you might have only six possible scan sites, while combat encounters are largely meted out by the game, but what you choose to do with this narrow range of options matters enormously. You need to recruit new rookies; you need an engineer to build a comms facility that will let you contact more territories; you need alien alloys to upgrade your weapons. You can’t have all of these. You can probably only have one. In 1989 Sid Meier described games as “a series of interesting decisions.” XCOM 2 is the purest expression of that ethos that Firaxis has yet produced.
                                Rock Paper Shotgun

As a tactical combat game, XCOM 2 has few peers. It’s such an astonishingly intelligent sequel that, in hindsight, the first game seems like a test run. Every element has been rethought and retooled, and while it was the strategic layer that required the most attention, it’s in the tactical layer that the genius of the design shines through most brightly.
Enduring extended loadtimes and the occasional wonky camera angle is a small price to pay for a game so accomplished. XCOM 2 is an improvement on its predecessor in every way and the vast majority of those improvements have been applied so intelligently that they risk making Enemy Unknown obsolete. That game was a smart remake of a classic. XCOM 2 is a classic in its own right and as good a sequel as I can remember.
                                ...

Eurogamer's Chris Bratt catches up with Jake Solomon of Firaxis Games and Johnny Lumpkin from Long War Studios, for a big ol' chat about the XCOM 2 mods they've been working on.
