      Re: Mass Effect: Andromeda

From reading the reviews this is kind of what I feared. It sounds like a lot of attention was paid to the combat which is improved but the story and characters aren't very interesting or deep. It sounds like the writing is weak which is unusual for a Bioware game.

I actually loved DA:I since the characters and story were interesting. I don't necessarily hate fetch/resource quests as long as the characters and overall story are strong. But I think I will wait for a sale and patches before buying Mass Effect.

Oh I know, just saying, it's crap like that issue that drove me away from PC gaming. As a married man who works a lot when I do have time to game I want to game, not spend time tinkering with getting things to work or getting them to work better. That is why I am a console gamer now and not a PC gamer anymore.

          This!

I try not to get too wrapped up in Review scores. Reviews are professional opinions and analysis. I played about 5 hours in the EA Access trial and I love it so far. It feels like Mass Effect. I am not going to let the scores effect me getting this game. There are plenty of series that people score very highly that I think is just ok (e.g. Uncharted series). Especially when it comes to my favorite series, as long as money is not too much of an issue, I will play them day 1 and form my own opinion.

Those of you who played the trial, did you notice the texture pop-in the reviews of mentioning. That is something that tends to trigger my "snobby gamer" senses but I can look past it if the game is good enough

Unfortunately yeah, I noticed some texture pop-ins while driving around in the Nomad. Nothing too jarring like entire landscapes or anything, but mainly things like a few plants/bushes and stuff like that. If I remember right, I think this was an issue with the previous games as well.

                  Re: Mass Effect: Andromeda

With regards to the concerns about the game being "light" on story elements....

The original ME series varied a lot from game-to-game in terms of its style...(in spoiler for those who haven't completed original trilogy)

                  Spoiler

So....three games, three different styles of writing (one balanced, one character-driven, and one story-driven).

Why am I bringing this up? Because I think any discussion of the story for ME:Andromeda right now has to be evaluated in the context of the new series. You just arrived in a new galaxy...to get thrown into some massive overarching plot right away would almost feel a bit contrived in my opinion. I wouldn't be shocked if this is more like ME2, some exploring, some character development, some basic plot development as you uncover...well.....whatever we're going to uncover.

                    Re: Mass Effect: Andromeda

So I finally beat ME2, the story was good but shorter than I thought, I didnt do many side missions because they are annoying, they tell you to go talk to someone but dont tell you exactly where they are located, got tired of spending an hour or so looking for one person.
Anyway this is the first time I've beat a game and didn't feel good about it. I lost my entire Normandy crew (accept Joker) and I lost most of my team. What I want to know is what happens if you choose not to save your crew by going into the Collectors domain?
Overall enjoyed the game but surprised at how short the story was, looking forward to ME3.

As a relatively new PC gamer, I built my PC almost a year ago, I can honestly say that I have spent zero time tinkering getting things to work or work better. My experience has been mostly positive. That said, I still buy most things on console from the games I have accross Steam, Origin, and Ubisoft, everything has been fine.

Got the game early (thanks Amazon pre-order!) and so far, after the first 30 minutes I like it.
It's been a slow beginning and yes the lip animations are a bit wonky.
But so far it feels like Mass Effect.

Hopefully I can dive further into the game later tonight.

Wow....did you not do any of the side missions where characters ask you to do something for them? They are critical to character survival in the game....

                          I've played ME2 probably 4 or 5 times....each time took about 30 hours....

I've heard it's a lot better but my last foray into it was Diablo 3 when Windows 10 released and I had tons of little issues with stuff that drove me nuts. I have a bit of OCD as well so PC gaming is always making me thinking I should be tweaking something to get it better and with a console you don't have that, so part of that "tinkering" is me. Its not always something is 'wrong' but rather my mind thinking "wait, is this the best way to have the pc run this game, what about...."

I do think that if I had more time and was single (meaning I could spend more money on my hobby LOL) I'd still be into PC gaming but the consoles keep me busy enough.

P.S. I always hear about how PC graphics are better (and they are a lot better no question) but I've noticed a lot of really high end super high resolution PC games look almost too "clean or sterile..." but this is based upon observations of games from a few years ago so maybe games made now are getting better at making games look more organic or natural..

Yeah I did all the loyalty missions, I guess coming off of Dragon Age Inquisition and FF15 ME2 didnt seem that long but for its time I guess it was a long game.
