It would be a case of a short term loss for us (since we don't get to play a Star Wars game) for a potential long term game.

If nothing else it has sparked some intense political debate in both Europe and the US. Belgium politicians have been looking into banning games with loot boxes, labeling them as they are gambling. There is also a video that is making it's way around the web of a Hawaii state legislator talking about the game's loot box system as gambling.

I hope that the industry polices itself here before the government gets involved. For Star Wars fans, our best hope is that Disney pulls the exclusive license that EA has after the negative press associated with this.

I'll tell you what's funny about that.

How Youtube basically started unfairly demonetizing channels for the same reason (not kid friendly) due to Disney and a few other corps.

Now, look at this mess. It's hypocritical and funny to see them on the other side of the coin.

It's EA wanting you to play the multiplayer so you'll spend money on microtransactions.

It's more like EA wanting you to spend money so you can play the multiplayer. Lol

Disney is greedy, too, even thought they put a halt to the pay to win purchases.

Disney just isn't for kids anymore.

Re: Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PS4, Xbox One & PC)

Well the top dog at EA talked about the whole MTX drama.

EA's CFO comments on the recent removal of paid loot crates from Star Wars Battlefront II, which occurred just hours before its release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

              I'll summarize quickly.

-EA didn't want cosmetic only items because it didn't make sense to the canon for there to be a pink dark vader running around.
a.) An odd statement given that the MP allows things like Yoda and Kylo-Ren to duel when they don't exist in the same timeline.
b.) The point is contradictory to something that was said during the developer AMA days before launch. They actually mentioned that they wanted to bring cosmetic items into the system down the road.
c.) Cosmetics don't have to be completely ludicrous like a pink darth vader. Darth Vader with his mask ripped off, Vader as Anakin, Luke in his pilot outfit, etc...There are many canon approved ways to handle cosmetics.

-We're not giving up on the notion of MTX"
a.) The statement isn't surprising on it's own, but it is interesting that it would be such a firm statement given both the recent backlash and other implications which go against what the community has asked for.

The real tl;dr though is this.
Micro-transactions are coming back, and they will NOT be cosmetic only.

I will only buy this if and when I find it cheap and used so that way EA gets no money.

I don't necessarily know about cheap but I did find a few used copies at Gamestop.

As much as I love SW, been burned by EA too many times with its sports games to let it happen in other genres too. I returned my unopened preorder copy, mainly because of the extremely limited offline.

Got the game after reading about everything on it and its way overblown. EA cut cost to everything and people still bitching about something on the interwebs. Typical.

Also while cards do help its not the end all be all in the game. If your good at the game then the cards shouldn't effect you hardly. The only one that really does work against you is the Aircraft one that make missiles take longer to target but your better off using the blasters anyway in an aircraft vs aircraft fight.

Those on the fence don't let the negatively sway you. Its a great game, great Campaign and loads of fun.

Yeah, and I could care less about the micro transactions, loot crates, pay to win, whatever else. Bottom line the game is not fun if I am stuck with boots on the ground. Even the first game allowed me to man a few ships in offline mode.

I want to go into space or man an AT AT, etc...

You don't have to buy DLC? Ok great. Instead you can have Free 2 Play game mechanics in a $60 AAA title. That seems like a good exchange /s
There is a reason that EA chose the MTX route, and it goes beyond not wanting to fragment the community. MTX are simply more profitable than traditional DLC packs. The only place it cuts costs is if you take the view that a segment of the player base subsidizes the rest. That has it's own drawbacks though (even for those being subsidized).

I've seen basically 3 different opinions on Star Cards.
1 - They help, but they don't make that much of a difference
2 - As long as you are semi competent they help a lot.
3 - They help, but it really depends on how they're used. A few random cards thrown together may not make much of a difference, but you can build cards towards a certain playstyle which will be very strong.

In all 3 scenarios there is a gameplay affecting mechanic that is (will be) purchasable with real world money no matter how large of an impact it is. Call it b*tching if you want, but I wouldn't be ok if I was playing someone in Madden who spent $5 to get speed boosts for all their players. Even if the overall effect isn't great, the average player in any game is well...average. If 2 average players go up against each other and one is packing additional stats what is the probability of the scenario?

Also, lets not forget this. The progression system is by every single account like molasses. You simply don't earn credits fast enough to get new items for your character in anything resembling a timely manner. The game has only been officially out for 2 weeks, and during that time MTX have been turned off. So, the only people right now with advanced cards are those who paid a bunch of money during the EA Access early period (before MTX were turned off), and those who have had the time to grind out enough credits to buy the loot boxes. What's going to happen in another month when the game time disparity becomes greater for various players, and/or when EA decides to flip the switch back on for MTX?

Anyone on the fence gets to choose how to spend their money. It seems silly though to disregard all the "bitching" when the game has a metacritic score below 70 and a User Score of 0.9 (and that's after metacritic deleted A LOT of user reviews). Just typical interwebz rage right?
