The Axis powers are very much in this game.

Yeah, they removed Nazis and references to them. They have been replaced with the German cross used in WWI.

Call of Duty II removes Nazis

Call of Duty II to censor swastikas, remove Nazis from game

Scrubbing Nazis from a "historically authentic" WWII game

          1. You play as Allied forces in the campaign; no campaign for Axis powers.
          2. Its German law; unsure about changes (if any) for US release
          3. Nazi symbolism is in the campaign; changes possibly made for multiplayer

I don't see the big deal, but whatever.

Well, I don't care about playing in the campaign as the Axis. I also don't give a crap about German law or how they view Nazis. Censor the game for them if their government forbids it, it's not forbidden here in the United States.

I'm hoping #3 is 100% what you say above, looking for definitive confirmation.

And to each his own but it matters greatly to me, when I play Madden I expect the Washington Redskins, not the Washington Generals, and if I play a WWII game I expect to fight Nazi, Aryan, male soldiers, not African-American women wearing a German cross.

As we all are. I vote with my wallet. As we all should. Bottom line, either the game is authentic or it is not.

If it isn't then it will be a rental at best for a lot of people who share my view on this sort of nonsense.

If it's done authentically in the campaign I will probably still buy this because I don't really play multiplayer. I don't like this sort of thing at all.

These companies need to quit thinking if they try to neuter things to avoid offending people that in doing so they actually are offending other people.

I don't see the problem including multiple character models for various skin tones and genders for multiplayer.

Either way Nazis are in the game. Whether or not they have their famous swastika or the German cross is no difference to me. It doesn't change history or the significance of the war.

If you're worried about authenticity then maybe relying on Activision's Call of Duty was the first mistake?

I'm not a stickler for detail as you are implying, but fighting Nazis in a World War II game is not a detail.

Hmmm...so would you be ok if 2K replaced Kobe with a Latino man or a Japanese woman?

It is not about "being upset", it's about realism. I am not looking for hugely realistic experience out of a Call of Duty but having the actual soldiers replicated accurately is not a detail, it's a pretty major issue in a war that was based upon ethnic cleansing.

They are still going to be Nazis. Simply because they won't (potentially) have swastikas burning in their foreheads doesn't prevent them from being Nazis.

At this point nope. But then again Kobe doesn't represent the horrible things that symbol does but to each his own.
