    <b><big>Microsoft's Success Forces Sony's Hand</big></b>
    Though the original Xbox never comes close to Sony's market share, the early launch of Xbox 2 causes Sony major concern. With numerous third-party developers in tow, including several Japanese developers, Xbox 2 has a strong launch. With momentum swinging in Microsoft's favor, Sony announces a Q1 2006 launch for PS3 in Japan. Rather than wait a half year for a U.S. and European launch, Sony ups the timetable by three months in an effort to maintain dominance in the marketplace. For the first time in many years, Sony is on the defensive.

      IGN can't see into the future, this is only what they want to happen. Most of this stuff they're pulling out their arse.

              didn't read the entire article, but I do think that Sony will be on the defensive since Xbox 2 releases first. As long as the Xbox 2 has great 3rd party game dev support (one of the things that killed Dreamcast was a lack of great games not done by Sega if I remember right) then Sony won't have that head start they got when they kicked out the PS2 first. Definitely changes the playing field a bit.

                  didn't read the entire article, but I do think that Sony will be on the defensive since Xbox 2 releases first.                       Hey, the earlier they release the new console system the less I have to wait for the prices to drop so I can purchase one.

                                      What is the projected release date of Xbox 2? Does anyone know if current Xbox games will work on Xbox2 (I think didn't some PS1 games work on PS2, or was it the other way around that PS2 games worked on PS1?)?

                                              Microsoft has not even officially confirmed that there IS an XBox 2 in development, let alone told us whether the machine will have backwards compatibility. You'd have to assume it would, seeing as how I can see developers still making XBox 1 games for another year or so after XBox 2 is released.

                                              As for projected release date, all IGN had in that article was Q4: 2005. That's a very broad range or dates there. I'd imagine it would come out before Christmas '05, in order to take advantage of the holiday shoppers.

                                                      Something that will hurt the launch of the Xbox 2 is the fact that there won't be an NFL launch title for it. Like they had for Xbox and NFL Fever. I know I won't be rushing to the store to buy one if they don't have any professional football games to play on it.
