It could definitely take 4 shots to take out a battleship.
As for strategy, nothing beats practice, knowing your ship and knowing your torpedos.
Of course it helps if you are already ahead of the ship/convoy you are trying to sink...but if you can get used to using your map and tdc screens for tracking it will be easier.
If you know you can get within say 1000 yards/meters of a ship and you know that your torpedo takes 55(I'm just giving you that number) seconds to travel that 1000 yards/meters, what I like to do is MARK(using the mark feature on the map) the ship and start the stopwatch. Watch the grid and see how far it travels in that 55 seconds. Now try and line yourself up for your 1000 yard/meter shot that far in advance of the ship. Of course he could change speed or course and there goes that advantage, but the firing solution from your WO should compensate.

This game is deep on realism.Really nice job by the developers.

Oh yeah....did you ever play 688 Attack Sub?!! That game was great.

688 Attack sub on Genesis (at least that's where I remember it from) was great

and yeah, I'm doing a pretty good job guestimating where I'll have the best chance to meet up...just doing one where I have to sink a carrier, and it's moving 20 knots, I can only go 7ish, so trying to figure out the angle I need to go vs. speed is rough. I was looking at the sub sim site and rumor has it that we'll be getting more drawing tools in a patch (I can see how it'd be pretty damn tough to play on 100% realism without more tools to plot speed, bearing, etc)...This game is great though, I can get a mark on someone, draw a line for their course, and then try my best to get in position, then pop up and take them out, just intense.

I'm still doing the academy missions and practice careers to get used to it. It helps me if i draw the maps on real pencil and paper and do the math for the manual shooting, then get the WE to do the solutions to compare. BTW if you like modern subsims look into Dangerous Waters, I think I posted the link on the first page.

Re: Silent Hunter III goes gold

I posted this over at the ubi sh3 forum:

Watch the tutorials. One of them has a brief show of all the lines to draw for a good start in tracking and intersecting a target.

With a close contact on the map (but still over 5-10 miles away), I draw a rough course line the contact is taking with the ruler. I then try to guesstimate where I want to intersect him depending on his speed and distance from me. If it is close to where he presently is, I draw a circle with radius of about 4 nm somewhere on his course line. I then draw two more ruler lines on either side of the course line running tangent to the circle.

So you now have sort of an open ended box where you think you might find him. If you are trying to intersect further away, then I draw a larger circle to increase the search area.

It seems like if the contact is reported as slow, it will be around 6 knots, medium around 10. You can sort of guesstimate how far the contact can get at that speed and find an intersection point somewhere ahead of him to lie in wait or begin your search in the box you drew there.

You can always get an assist by setting your speed to 6 or 10 knots or whatever you think your target is moving at and plotting a waypoint a set distance and seeing how long it will take you to get there on the map at the waypoint. You can use that info to see approximately how long it would take your target to get somewhere at that speed. Then plan accordingly.

As he approaches and you pick him up on the hydrophone, I mark the end of the hydrophone bearing lines every minute or two to get a more exact idea of his course. Then draw another ruler line along all your x marks to show his course. The rest is up to you. You have his course plotted pretty well, you just need to get into final position to take a shot. It seems like although lone merchants do some zig zagging, their general course is pretty much the same for a long ways.

EDIT: Oh and a protractor would go a heck of a long way in helping on the map screen. What kind of uboat captain forgets his protractor? Hopefully that can be addressed in a patch

I'm glad I'm not the only one who ends up putting a ton of lines on their map ...it's definitely not a game for the casual sub fan, but if you enjoy hunting down something you're good to go...

I'm not that great yet, but I'd be up for it...haven't even touched whatever multiplayer there is (I think there's online of some sort)...

i think I'm going to put together a table with general knot speeds (like 5, 10, 20, basic ones you might see) and how long it takes them to go 5k meters, etc...I figured all that out for a single mission and it set me up in pretty good position. I think I'm going to tackle the manual torpedo stuff now, feels kinda cheap to just fire them with no work.

I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread ...but if you are not afraid of being a total geek....you can bring your map to kinko's...have them enlarge it a little and laminate it.
You can then use a grease pencil to make your marks...and erase them when you are done.
I'm FAR from being ready in this game to go head to head or team up with someone...but I'll be up for it sooner or later!
