PSP: Not Flying off the shelves??

Interesting from IGN. Seems people (besides the hard core gamer)may actually be put off by the price...

I work retail, and our store received 60 PSP's and sold 10 the entire day. Outside of hardcore gaming stores, I was curious to find out if that was just an anomaly, or the standard. I actually had many people come up and talk to me about it, but balked at the price of $249.99.

hmm.. the PSP launch at my Wal-Mart went like this. We opened at 7am. 10am we sold one. 11:30. we sold another. 5:00pm. Almost sold one, another customer said "metal gear is a card game" lost the sale. we have 58 units left. great day.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I visited my local Best Buy in downtown Chicago and there were plenty of PSPs to go around. There was a stack of at least 50 PSPs in a display in the middle of the store and this was around 2:00 in the afternoon. After all of the talk of preordering I was surprised that Best Buy (in the busiest part of Lincoln Park) ending up having such a large quantity, especially because they advertised in Sunday's ad about opening early to sell PSPs today. Just thought you'd be interested.

Two things, no Hype and poor allocation. Sony launched with 1 million units, but did a bad job with the allocation of these units , EB/GS got too little and Bestbuy, Walmart etc... got too much. If you read the story all you see is Bestbuy, Walmart etc... still having units. Most EB/GS stores are indeed sold out, just try and find one here in New York. Its million units with little to no hype of course it wouldn't sell out day one. Which brings me to my next point...

No hype, Look how long it took for them to give us a price. Sony didn't air their first TV ad until two days before launch. PSP has isn't quite known to the general public. Up until a few weeks ago when news stories started to pop up only people who really new about it were internet users/videogame mag readers.

Much like GTA 3 the PSP will sell it self to the general public through word of mouth and just plain being seen. The price will scare off a few but not as many as you think. I've seen first hand already just what lengths people will go through to buy one of these units.

The PSP will sell, infact the IGN story is kinda misleading, which btw was taken from the PSP boards which just happens to be filled with DS fanboys right now. So I wouldn't be shocked if half of those stories are just that stories made up.

Sales numbers come out soon enough so we'll see. I bet it sells a good 300,000 to 450,000 of the first 1 million shipped by the time the sales numbers are released. Oh and keep in mind this is the largest consumer electronics release ever much less console/handheld which has never released more than 500,000 units at one time. New TV's don't ship more than 200,000 at a time.

I think this whole story is just a bit premature.

Try Virgin store in Times square...they had some yesterday late in the afternoon....actually had ridge racer which i could not find anywhere!
