I almost reupped my TOR account over the weekend, but then I just got really busy. Solid story, but the combat was always a little weak to me.

Re: Official OS General MMO Information Thread

So something tells me that I want to try an MMO but I'm just feeling a little lost/overwhelmed at the idea. I have a decent-enough laptop but tend to use it more for 4X and sports management sims. So I guess I'm looking for something on PS4. I've considered SWTOR since I'm a big Star Wars nut...just don't know if the laptop could handle it well enough. I've grabbed the F2P version of DCUO but haven't fired it up yet. Also thinking about TESO because I've loved Oblivion and Skyrim (played just a little of Morrowind but none of the others). Never played a FF game before and I sometimes struggle to get into games that I don't have much back story on.

Any others out there that I should consider? I'm kinda planning to give DCUO a try just to see if I like the idea...is the general concept typical enough to give me a good taste of what to expect?

Also, any good sites out there to introduce me to all the basic terminology and stuff? I've tried Google but the first few results weren't as basic/simple as I think they were trying to be. I've been able to figure out some of the abbreviations but don't always have a good grasp on what they mean in terms of overall gameplay.

Re: Official OS General MMO Information Thread

SWTOR might be a good choice as an intro to MMO's since it's pretty easy to get into with a great Star Wars story. The main reason I say it's easy to get into is that it can be played almost exclusively single player. Given that you seem to really enjoy backstory I would probably recommend this one above all others.

That being said. The most important aspect to MMO's that I have ever found is playing with friends. Not necessarily real life friends who buy the game with you, but find a good group in a clan or guild who you can play with regularly, chat about the game and other stuff and group up together. MMO's are meant to be played with a lot of people, and if you don't have your own little group to play with then game content becomes very difficult. You are forced into a lot of pick up groups

As for which MMO to recommend it depends on what you are looking out of it. Do you want to pvp, pve, a mix? Do you want lots of questing, beautiful environments, an in depth crafting system? Is combat important to you or do you only care about story? There are many different genres within the MMO category.

As for terminology I'm not sure if there is a single great source. It's something you kind of just pick up. You could try heading to mmorpg.com or some game specific website and check out the forums. See what people say and if there are any weird acronyms or anything like that then urban dictionary offers at least a decent explanation in most cases.

Some of the games currently out.

SWTOR - Great story. It's the only MMO I have ever played where I was interested in the story of even small side quests. If you like Star Wars then you will definitely love this one, at least for a time. Each of the 8 or so classes has their own unique story where you play through it as though you are the hero (similar to a single player rpg). The game is free to play, but has a premium option that costs a monthly fee which unlocks various things for you. Mainly it just lessens some of the grind. Combat is ok. Some of the skills are pretty cool, but most power combinations don't take a lot of forethought. Lastly, they drastically increased the power of companions (an AI teammate who follows you everywhere) so you can pretty much solo through the entire game if you want.

Guild Wars 2 - Good story, some really interesting classes/professions. Combat is a bit more advanced than SWTOR with the need to switch weapons and time/use skills correctly. Probably has the best open questing system of any MMO I have ever played with public quests that you randomly find on the map. Anyone in your vicinity can participate even if you aren't technically grouped with them. The WvWvW (World vs World) feature is pretty cool, though it does get repetitive after a time. Leveling up is pretty easy for the first 40 levels or so, but after that completing quests in the main story line becomes extremely difficult without help.

Black Desert Online - Currently the top rated game on MMORPG.com. I played around with it a little during it's NA launch. Story seemed ok, but I didn't get deep enough into it to really get a good feel. Combat was fast paced and a lot of fun with active dodging being a key component. I only spent a few hours on it so I can't give a great impression of it, but it seemed like it had potential. A fairly heavy grind from what I could tell though.

I have never really tried out an MMO until I downloaded DCUO on the Xbox 1 a couple days ago. Having a lot of fun so far, besides some acting ignorant over chat every now and then I don't have anything negative to say about it.

Wow...thanks for all of this information! I'll have to do some digging around. I like what you've had to say about SWTOR but I'm nervous about whether my laptop can handle it. It's about a year old but I know that some of those games aren't really designed for a multi-purpose laptop.

I don't know if having a good story is necessarily important but I find myself struggling sometimes when I don't have a good grasp on the state of the game world. The fact that I could go solo for a while is a bonus, I guess.

As far as what I'm looking for, I'd guess that it's probably at least one of the things that you mentioned. I just don't have a good handle on what all of that means. I'll keep digging around to see if I can get more familiar with the lingo.

No problem. I've been off and on with MMO's since around 2003. They can be a lot of fun, they can be frustrating, they can be grindfest, and they can be just plain boring. A good group to play with will always make the experience better though. That is the main advise I would give. Everything else you can figure out by playing, seeing what you like, what you don't like, etc.

If your laptop is only a year old I would imagine it wouldn't have any problems with running SWTOR (I think the game is 5 years old now, something like that).

This is one of the things I've enjoyed about DCUO so far, I've teamed up to tackle some of years but also have solo'ed quests for an hour or two without a problem. I enjoy that I have an option on whether I want to team up or not and haven't been forced into either scenario yet.

If you like Star Trek that MMO is getting a PS4 release this fall, it's not too bad and it can be played for a long time solo, I'm sure I put 100 hours into it solo, didn't go through everything and I'm sure there's more that has been released since.

What I didn't like about it was you hit a progression wall, you got the last ship upgrade (that you don't have to pay for), you level up all the way, and then there's almost no progression without it being a mundane grind fest. The story is actually pretty good, as far as MMOs go, and you play through as three factions: Federation, Klingon, and Romulan (MMO takes place after the last TNG movie, so Romulans are going through a bit of a civil was between the Tal Shiar and...well everybody else). Hopefully the worst part of the game, ground combat, will be improved on the console because it was terrible on PC.

Saw that the F2P game "Riders of Icarus" has started an open beta on Steam. Watched a bunch of the gameplay via Youtube. The game looks decent, I like the mounting system and being able to tame monsters. Still I'll wait to see what the open beta is like as people are saying Nexon took out large chunks of content from the Korean version.

Installed it tonight, really crowded naturally, and a little clunky, but really like the taming gimmick. Got to level 5, probably try it out some more over the weekend.

It's not bad, collecting things are fun. The taming seems a bit abstract to start out with but who knows. As a Korean F2P game (from Nexon especially) I don't expect much.

Not anything I'll spend money on most likely, but decent enough to keep installed for now.
