    In my opinion, if squaring something is not allowed, then taking the square root of something shouldn't be allowed. The xth root of a positive number n is nothing more than n^(1/x). That means that when you get to the square root part, you are going to use 1 and 2.

    I still don't think your riddle has been answered by my logic.

      Can't keep you from thinking that, but using sqrt was in the rules of the riddle. Not using it would be a different (and I think impossible) riddle. The problem was to get a way to equal 19 such that if the formula was written down, the only numbers you see are the 1, 2, and 3. Since you dont see digits with a sqrt sign, it fits. Arguments could be made for using pi and such, but those are numbers.

        My summation one should probably work too, as that's how we were taught to do them in Algebra (I don't think we've ever used that term for anything else again).
