I agree. Although I have to admit that I usually target between 5-6 reps while benching. It's not for show at all, just my preference for what I'm trying to get out of my workouts.

I have seen good results from it. I will do 3 exercises 5 sets for each muscle group.

I am curious to hear why the coaches said it was a bad regimen. What did they change yours to?

They didn't like isolation days like that. We always did full body stuff, but I'm sure it was just their preference especially since we had limited time in the weight room cause of all the time we'd spend on the court, watching film, in study hall (ugh!), etc.

Thanks for the info. I do not play a smart so my workout is just for overall health. I am trying to develop more muscle tone and just speed up my metabolism which is naturally slow. I know building muscle is one way of doing that.

I will never do that because I can't bench an insane amount even if my life depended on it.

you really need to learn about diet.

thats not even alot of food if you want to put on mass, and chips and sodas? LOL

that's not showing off ... higher weight\lower reps builds mass

so let me get this straight, your bench sets look like this 175, 175, 175, 175, 175?

i use 225 on the days i do benchpress, but not for show. i do 4 sets, increasing weight and usually lowering reps, like 15 reps, then 13, then 12, then 10. then i do a 5th burnout set with 225. on a good day i can eek out 12-15 reps with 225. damn, guess i sounded like a showoff just then....j/k

Just bought the Bowflex SelecTech 552 dumbell set, and I love them. So easy to change the weight, and the weight is actually extremely accurate, using my digital scale.

It included a workout guide, which I completed Session 1, using the "4 step rep" today, and I have to say, my muscles are burning like crazy. For those of you who haven't heard of the 4 step rep, or watched the video showing you how to get the most out of your workout, I'd definitely recommend it.

I know the selectech are more expensive than other dumbells, but I love them for the ease of use... definitely a great christmas present to me.

Age. Wait till you hit your 30's.

Aside from that AA's suggestions on protein intake. I recently read an article in M&F about gaining size and the diet they had in there was nuts. You're basically eating a full course meal every 2 hours.
I remember Arnold once saying that if you want to gain an inch on your arms you had to gain 10 lbs.

Some guys are simply hard gainers. I'm the same way. Just learn to appreciate your strengths. There's guys at my gym that would love to be lean and ripped and then there are guys that are lean and ripped who want to be heavier and bigger. The grass is always greener...

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

I still follow my old high school lifting schedule. Four days a week.

Monday-Thursday are upper body days, Tuesday-Friday are lower body. I'm pretty weak though (compared to where I want to be - trying to get to D-lineman strength) so if I feel the drive, I'll hit up the gym on Wednesday or Saturday occasionally.

Interested, but what's wrong with that workout? It came directly out of one of my Men's Health magazines... I figured it was a decent workout...
It all depends on what you're shooting for. That's an upper-body heavy schedule. If that's what you want, there's nothing wrong with it at all. If the workout is in athletic preparation or anything like that, you should probably get more legs in there. Lower body has always been my strong suit, and believe me if you play football and are a lineman, having that lower body strength will make up for a lack of upper strength every time.
