TV, let's be honest, nobody wakes up early in the morning to watch tv. College students get as much sleep as they possibly can before they have to wake up. Radio? Nobody listens to the radio anymore. I heard at least 3 interviews today where people were quoted as saying "Well, I was listening to my ipod when I heard/saw/etc." Very few people will check their email prior to leaving their rooms. I would always check my email for the first time during my first class. IMO, i don't think the administration should be getting railed like they are. Same yahoo shoots 2 people in a dorm, they shut down that dorm and the shooter disappears. They get the situation under control, and feel everything is fine. I can see their reasoning.
But there was nothing under control. They had a guy who just killed two people on campus running loose. Even if it's hard to shut down the campus, some people could've been warned and a few lives would've been saved. Even if the students wouldn't have seen a news story themselves, a parent, relative, or friend could've seen it and spread the news.

I guess UA's police is different. You can't be on a street on campus and not see a UAPD cruiser not to mention the ones that stroll around on the bikes. State certification gets you that I guess.

Our dorms here are different as well. You can't get into the new dorms(which house most of the students in dorms) unless you live there because you have to swipe your ID card to get in.

I'm sorry but the administration could've done things a lot better.

They said the ID card system is set on a clock, the locks go on at a certain time of night, and unlock the following morning.

That's how it is in Penn State also. I heard a VT student earlier this morning on CNN state that you could go into any dorm until 10 p.m. which is when you would need your ID card.

****... that's pretty much the same policy here at RU.

Well that kinda defeats the purpose. Ours are always locked and only open for residents with their IDs.

                    Re: Shooting at Virgina Tech

As anyone who has ever attended Tech realizes, logistically you cannot shut the campus down. Not enough police personnel without calling in local/regional law enforcement (which is what ultimately happened), which would take almost two hours anyway.

The first shooting, which has not been connected as of yet, seemed like a domestic incident from the get-go. Two bodies, one room. Hell, there may have even been a gun left at the scene for all we know.

The time the first shooting occurred was just prior to morning classes beginning, meaning that there were around 10,000 students on route to class (either via car or foot). Pretty difficult to stop 10,000 people on a whim.

People are also asking how a non-student could get inside of the dorm room to begin with. This is the south, we hold doors for people without checking ID's first. As for Norris Hall, Tech is a public campus, for better or for worse, thus making access to the learning facilities quite easy.

Interestingly enough, the majority of the criticism of the Tech police response is coming from reporters who just landed in the area about an hour after the mayhem had ended.

I saw first hand how much confusion there was on campus during this incident. I myself was almost arrested before I could flash my press pass. I believe the police and administration did amazing jobs considering the rumors and fear that was sweeping the campus before (and after) the shooter was found.
Overall satisfaction also makes the decline!!!!!!!!!!!!

10 pm to 10 am the doors are locked. But, as I said in my other post, we hold doors for people all of the time down here.

                              That is also true.

Southern friendliness is definitely not smart in these days.

Same for us at Lynchburg College with a twist... as long as you are a student with an ID you can get in any building on campus till midnight, but after that, you need to be a resident of that specific dorm to get in. And the dorms don't reopen till 10 AM. So it's pretty safe, and at least to get into any building here you have to have a school ID .
