Re: Shooting at Virginia Tech
In reality, there is a fine line between their similarities. A movie is a movie. People understand it's not real. Especially a 19 year old kid.
Watching a real teenager spew about blood shed and succeeding in, then being promoted for his actions by news sources...there's a difference on how that affects a child thinking of doing something similar.
Now, it gives those children reason to believe that their actions will live in history and in some ways, they feel rewarded for being remembered.
That's a disturbing trend."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Well, besides one being totally fictional and fantasy and the former being an actual real-life disturbed child, they are similar.

Thing is, I don't think most kids/teenagers watch the news anyway. The internet is their main source and they would of probably found the video anyway. A 19 year old would know the difference between a movie, but the facts are still real. They are also smart enough where they wouldn't need to see the video of this guy ranting and raving to know what he did.
I just think too much is being made of them showing the video.Last edited by Brandwin; 04-20-2007, 11:46 AM.Comment

Does that serve as a motivational factor for some of these psychopaths? Sure. But I think if you have it in you to do something like this, you're going to do it whether you see a movie or not.Comment

Re: Shooting at Virginia Tech
Yep....same here. There have been a few schools closed for different days this week due to threats. This seems to happen during this week every year. It's just more pronounced this year with the VT tragedy.Comment

Re: Shooting at Virginia Tech
Exactly. People are trying to explain irrational behavior with rational thoughts. It doesn't work that way. This guy was mentally ill and just lost it. I can't even begin to try to explain his incoherent blabbing on the video because it didn't make any sense to me."You got it man. I don't watch hockey." I agree..that's why I'm saying showing the video isn't that big of a deal, like people seem to be making it.Comment
