Ohh..I thought you were referring to South Charlotte in a sarcastic way.

So, I take it you don't like Eastland Mall?

I'm not a fan of getting shot and FUBU doesn't look good on me.

That used to be a great mall, what with the ice skating rink and all that. We hardly ever went there when I was a kid because my mom was/is deathly afraid of Independence Blvd. Before Carolina Place went up, we'd go to Southpark Mall. After Carolina Place was built, we did all of our mall shopping there.

Oh boy. I'm going down there Saturday as I've said. BUT, I've been talking with this guy who is going to get me a phone conversation with a very important man in the John Hancock company. He makes it sound like I'll have a very good shot to get a job in Boston. Good lord this is crazy. I really want to relocate to Charlotte and I don't want to live in Boston. First off I don't like HUGE cities and the climate sucks. I'm in a tough spot right now and it blows.

Boston is attractive because I could get a great entry point into the career I'm going to undergo. I just graduated with a finance degree from ND.

This looks to be a very tough and important decision.

The area around the school is fine, there are countless places to eat and a ton of major retail stores(Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot, Sam's, ****'s, etc) within a mile of campus. All of them are nice except the Wal-Mart after dark(what woudl you expect?). And the campus itself is nice and keeps growing. However, if you are going to go to school there, don't live in the student off-campus housing directly around campus. As the city is cleaning up uptown, the low-income families they are kicking out are moving to the cheap student housing around the school, it is becoming a serious problem. There are plenty of nice apartments complexes under 3-5 miles away from the campus, but I wouldn't suggest anything directly around the school.

Good luck with the decision. Looks like it's your location pitted against your career. Think it through - don't do anything rash - and you'll be fine whatever you decide.

If you are young and don't have a family, maybe follow the Boston lead, but otherwise, go with Charlotte.

                    Re: Anyone from Charlotte?

Hey man, I just moved to Charlotte. Graduated from Virginia Tech and had a job already lined up down here. I spent a good month looking online and then taking a visit down here.

I got EXTREMELY lucky and found a 1 bedroom place in Uptown for $779 (819 with washer and dryer). I doubt you will be able to find a place like that right now during the summer since they increase rent rates right about this time.

If I didn't find this place in Uptown, I would have tried to find a place in the Southpark area. Lots of nice new apartments and townhomes going up around there.

I didn't recognize any of the complexes you listed earlier, but if you do list some that I know, I can give you a quick rundown of what I know about them.

Good luck with your big decision. Boston would be a fun city to live in and have many career opportunities. I think Charlotte offers many of the same though, especially with 2 of the biggest banks here.

If you have any other questions for a person who was in your shoes (minus actually having a job already here), don't hesitate to ask.

                    Thanks,
                    DaHokieBird

I had a nice response written until the damn hotel asked me to accept something...poof... see you later response.

Anyways, I found an apartment. It's about 10 miles south of Charlotte in a blossoming community. I really like the surrounding area and the complex was what I was looking for.

Here's my question to all OSers out there:
                      Which apartment do I take?
#1 - 2nd floor, no people living above me, opens Aug. 11
                      #2 - 2nd floor, people above me, opens mid-July, a little cheaper
Here's my situation which makes this difficult. I am dying to get out of my house and move into an apartment, so a month will seem like forever. For scheduling interviews, being down there would be much easier. The only negative of the apartment is that someone lives above me. I'm leaning heavily to moving in the July apartment. It's just good to hear some thoughts from others.

DaHokieBird, if you don't mind me asking, what do you do in Charlotte?

Obviously, you don't know what you're talking about. 10 years ago your comments would be correct.

I live right off of I85 in Concord and it's far from being over-run by "rednecks." Most of the people that live in this high-growth area are very yuppie, if anything.

I prefer this area to south Charlotte in a big way.

                                Re: Anyone from Charlotte?

Hey stewatt, glad to here you found a place. I actually start work tomorrow at Wachovia doing IT Audit. I got the job through on-campus interviews this past fall.

About the apartment issue and what floor. I've lived in apartments where I've had people above me and also ones where I was on the top floor. My current place and my last place I was on the first floor. I have not had much noise at all from either. Every once in a while someone will drop something, but in all honesty it does not bother me at all. I feel that in more professional areas, you don't have to worry about it as much. Living on the first floor has one really nice perk also; it's A LOT easier to move your stuff in and out of. Nothing more I hated then moving up 3 flights of stairs.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate. When I was looking to move to Charlotte, I relied on the internet heavily to gather information.

                                Thanks,
                                DaHokieBird
