    Native American Mascots/Names

Before this topic gets locked, just to be clear I got this ok'd with Mike. Please keep racial/poltical discussion out of this because I really would like a good basis for my paper.

I'm in a Sociology of Sport class and decided to write my 10 page paper on the use of Indian names/mascots. I'm primarily focusing on the University of Illinois and its former mascot, Chief Illiniwek. Do people agree with recent rulings to ban the use of "the Chief?" Do you guys think we are become too politically correct or do you believe that these types of mascots are demeaning?

Personally, while I am an incredibly open-minded person, I don't believe in using Native American mascots/names. I would only condone it if for example, an entire tribe such as the Seminoles came out and gave their blessing that would be fine to keep the Seminoles as the mascot of Florida State. In the case of University of Illinois however, the dress that Chief Illinwek wore for most of the tenure was actually from the Sioux tribe and the "dance" was a combination of moves that by-in-large white men had adopted throughout the years of them being "the Chief."

Also, I think when you have a people that were closely related to the Illiniwek tribes such as the tribe in Oklahoma (name escapes me) and they are largely opposed, I think you must accomodate their wishes. I think a name like the "Redskins" is also highly offensive but thats just my opinion.

To people that make arguments about Fighting Irish and such...I think its very different because it toes the line between race and ethnicity. I believe there is a big difference between calling a team the Notre Dame Blacks or calling the team the Notre Dame Fighting Irish IMO. But that is ALL I'm going to say about any type of race discussion.

Anyway, that's my .02 cents. If anybody wants to call me "too PC" or whatever, than so be it. But I really want other people's thoughts and feelings about this issue to make a good paper.

If this gets out of hand for some reason, lock it.

    Thanks fellas.

Ha, this thread will last long.

Banning Native American names is way too "PC". I'm still pissed the Braves got rid of "Chief Knock A Homa. "

When I was on a mission trip in Montana on the Blackfeet Indian reservation, I asked one of their leaders how they felt about this issue and he more or less said he didn't care, there are more important things to them than sports mascots.

My opinion is to ask the tribes involved. If they're against it (Like the Illini tribes?) then get rid of it. However, the Seminoles in Florida support the Florida State use of it (I'm pretty sure they've voted), so is it really "offensive" in that case?

You know Americans have it good when people can find time to try to find things to be offended by. That's all this type of thing is, being overly politically correct.

I'm kind of annoyed since the college I attend just changed the mascot named from Redmen to Riverhawks (what is a Riverhawk pray tell?). To me we got rid of a name that meant something since the university started off as an all female Cherokee Seminary and is situated in Cherokee Nation.

I don't understand this "politically correct" thing. The same people who complain that America is too "PC" are the same one's who want to control everything in the media. What it sounds like is that people are made because they can't get away with making racist jokes or being able to talk bad about certain things anymore.

Anyway, the only thing I see are people who want to change stupid, insulting names, into something better. I don't think that people would care so much if the teams that do this weren't making these crappy caricatures of Native Americans.

As long as the tribes that the mascots represent are alright with it, I don't see a problem with it. But otherwise there's no need to offend people when it's not necessary.

I can only speak for myself but I know I most definitely do not want to control the media, that is quite contrary to my beliefs. To the contrary it's the PC people who want to control the media and what can be said. And the ironic joke about all of this is that most of the so called "offensive" material is being brought up as being offensive or shameful not by the people who are being referenced but rather do-gooders who do so out of latent guilt for their own respective lot in life.

Maybe, but often times I feel like people think things are too PC until THEY identify with the people getting crapped on. That said, I think most names are respectful and downright bad ***. The Redskins name is ridiculous though.

That's exactly how I feel too. Until you are the minority in the situation, its hard to put yourself in their shoes.

Something like the Chicago Blackhawks isn't bad at all but names like the Redskins or teams that have white guys playing Native American streotypes are the problems.

I'm a Redskin fan and feel that the name is quite offensive, especially if you know the history behind the term Redskin. It's offensive not just to a paticular tribe but all Native Americans. But being that the Redskins is one of the most valuble franchises in all of sports, I doubt a name change is eminent.

It's the name of a sports team. Get over it.

People in this world spend way too much time arguing about pointless nonsense.
