The media are really good at NOT reminding you of that as often as possible. To the point that I wonder how many of these anchors/writers know one way or the other. It's math so therefore facts and conclusions and stuff.

The questions that ought to be answered before that phrase ever gets uttered is "Which studies?" and "Where?".

I have a broader gear-grinder which is the media's reporting of science in general. First of all, "study" is not an accurate word for anything, especially if they're reporting something as fact. Was it a modeling publication? Because modeling outputs are not data. Was it a well done randomized controlled trial run at reputable places? OK, now you've got my attention.

But "study" can range from 'total BS' to 'potentially landscape changing', and everything in between. And no one ever reads the primary literature themselves, least of all the reporters or news organizations that report on this stuff. You can't just take the authors' conclusions and run with it; you're supposed to read the data yourself and make your own conclusion, which may or may not agree with the authors' conclusions (it's surprising how often you will not agree).

This is why you get media people (and people in general) saying my most recent gear-grinder (I've got a lot 'em stored up, I guess!), which is "I believe in science". If you are blindly saying you believe in the very vague and ill-defined notion of "science", then you probably actually don't know much about science. Science is not a religion. The whole point of it is that it doesn't require "belief", rather it is a set of provable or data-based conclusions that each of us are free to analyze and critique and arrive at our own conclusions about what the data do or do not imply. Blind belief in what an "expert" says is more accurately described as "religion'.

I suppose this is all asking too much, though, because if media people were better at critically reading and interpreting scientific data, they probably wouldn't be media people.

      [/end rant]
Love it! I just about started to go, "Newman! Newman!"

I've never liked the term "unanswered points".

Like, if it's 14-0 and the other team made it 14-14, the team coming back gets credit for 14 unanswered points, but if the original points were made first, doesn't that make the next batch of points answering points?

plus they really were answered. might not have been the answer the announcer wanted to hear but the answer could have been a 3 & out, fumble, interception or running out a half among other answers.

Not really a grind, more of an annoyance: when people get many likes in YouTube and then the OP edits the comment to give thanks or "I didn't know I would get this many likes". Get out of here.

I think my main Youtube creator pet peeve, outside of the fake drama that the bigger channels create, is when they blame the "algorithm" for lower views. It's always based on anecdotal "some people have said they aren't seeing my videos in their feed" type nonsense. Always comes across as entitled. If you put out videos that people want to see they will get views.

My biggest issue/peeve is almost like clock work during the year, certain channels will throw up a woe is me /look at me I'm crying, video.
I don't know maybe just my old butt being "grumpy old man" stage.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

Trying to explain anything that has to do with technology to someone who doesn't know much if anything about technology.

I have a varying level of tolerance/patience depending on the situation and moreso how I feel at that point in time.

However, sometimes it gets frustrating trying to explain some things to people who are especially quick to write off anything that has to do with technology the second anything goes wrong, acting like everything should be as easy as a snap of their finger and it works with 0 problems ever.

Its 2021 and I'm still explaining to family members of mine the simplest things (simple to me) like what the power button icon looks like, what the play/pause, stop, rr, ff buttons look like. Or how to connect something using bluetooth. And mostly relevant to the present day, I'm explaining so many different features on Zoom to people, and I don't even use Zoom outside of when someone asks me to help them with it (spoiler, I google their question and just do whatever the Zoom site says to do).

Many times I feel like tech support lol. Except it's harder for me since I'm a visual person and I often work using trial and error, so I have to physically see some things to really get a feel for how it works, how it should work, how to avoid problems, and how to explain things to people.
