But the pages will be blank and the book will actually be $99. And you'll buy it because everyone is talking about it and do you really want to be the guy that stands in line at B&N for ten minutes, imagining how awesome this book with clip art on the cover will be, to then tell the clerk you changed your mind?

    Nobody likes being that person.

The best thing is you are invited to share your experiences and bad reviews within the blank pages of your book. And when you look at the cover to marvel at your work, know that I think it's worth exactly what it says on it: 99 cents!

Certain skins do, or at least they used to.

EDIT: Just checked, OS 2.0 default and 2.0 default (dark) are the only ones that DON'T have that feature. OS 2.0 SciFi, ESPN, ESPN2 and OS 1.0 I'm at work all have that feature.

If by page 5 I can tell the writing won't keep me (the writing is the hook for me. Plot is second), I put it down and move on to something I enjoy.

It's like, really? So you expect me to spend 13 hours (with the way these stupid shows are nowadays) so I can see whether I'll be hooked onto a show? These writers do lower episode quantities for shows on FX, HBO, AMC etc which means that literally every episode has to be outstanding or else it's a massive waste. If you're going to keep the seasons shorter, the quality and purpose of each episode better be spectacular. I feel cheated when I watch a show that runs for 3 months waste an episode.

One, two episodes for a drama. Three, four episodes for a comedy. That's it. That's enough for me to tell whether I'll love something enough to watch it.

I agree with Matrix's timeframes, with the exception of Parks And Rec. First season didn't do anything for me, but I followed some advice and kept watching.

I'm glad I did. That show is amazing.

                13 hours? No.

6 or 7 if it's something that's pretty universally acclaimed? Yeah.

The modern drama has become, in essence, long form storytelling. Standalone episodes don't exist anymore. That's why I equate it to giving up in the first 5 pages of a book, because proportionally that's what you're doing if you give up after an episode. You're not giving the story a chance.

I just think a lack of patience cheats people out of a lot of really good television.

Yeah, I suffered through that first season and bailed (it wasn't that good IMO). I hear it got awesome though, and I've missed out.

There's still tons of "crime of the week" dramas where you don't really need any back info to follow from week to week. Usually the only ongoing storyline is someone has a crush on a co-worker, which is pretty easy to figure out even the first time you've watched the show and it's a random episode in the middle of season 3.

It's shows like that that usually cause the new intriguing shows to get cancelled after about 3 shows because all the old people tune into their familiar NYPD characters and the ratings are nowhere to be found for the new guys.

(This is mostly referring to network shows, the cable dramas are light years better in terms of story development, probably because they get a longer leash.)

Long form storytelling doesn't mean you can waste episodes or have a series premiere that's worthless or generally uninteresting.

                            The Americans hooked me immediately.

Quite frankly, it is pretentious as hell of a show to expect you sit through half a season or an entire season just to see something worthy of continuing with it.

The Americans is a bad *** show.

It's going to catch on eventually and people will flock, wishing they had watched from the beginning.
