When I first started work over 11 years ago, part of my job became doing inspections of properties. On my first or second day of training, I went out with an old woman co-worker and worked in a small rural town. It was freezing outside with snow everywhere. We went for lunch and then right after we had started to work after lunch, she said she needed to use the bathroom. We went to a full service gas station where a guy filled up the car while she used the bathroom.

She was driving so I was waiting for her in the passenger side when she comes back to the car. She heads to her purse in the back seat and pulls out a plastic grocery bag. She says, "The pipes are frozen in the wash room." She goes back to the washroom and a short time later comes out holding a bag with "stuff" in it. She throws it into the garbage can outside while the gas station attendant looks confused. She climbs in the car and says, "The toilets were frozen. I couldn't just leave it there." I'm thinking, yes you can. Remember, her stomach was probably upset.

We drive away, I don't say a word. We're going down a sideroad and she starts sniffing. "Do you smell that?", she says. I'm already stunned when she says, "The pipes were frozen. I couldn't wash my hands." She pulls the car over and washes her hands in the snow bank in the ditch. Needless to say, I never asked to drive the car. I finally broke down late the next day and told a co-worker. The story became legend and is simply referred to as "The Pat Cowan story."

She wouldnt have had to wash her hands in the snow if I was there. I would have sucked her fingers clean.

I absolutely loathe slow drivers. Some guy pulled out in front of me, and proceeded to drive 30mph in a 50 for about 1.5 miles. I honestly thought about getting out of my car, then running(he was going so slow I could outrun him) after him screaming profanities.

Just pass the SOBs up.

Last night I was on a single lane with a 55 speed limit and some dude ahead going 30ish. Went to pass him and the dude tried not to let me but the Z was no match. Guess he didn't know what I was driving.

Going 20 miles below the speed limit is just ridiculous though.

One other thing I can't stand is this freaking weather! It was 90ish two weeks ago and suppose to be 80 this Sunday. Give me the cold damnit!

Okay, I said it once in this thread but I need to get if off my chest after my drive into school. It drives me insane when someone can't get out of the left lane and they are staying in it for no reason. On my way to school I get behind some jackass cut me off to go into the left lane to begin with, then stayed in the left lane for 5 miles or so, speeding up and slowing down to make impossible for me to pass them on the right. Seriously if you get caught doing that, you need to lose your license for a substantial amount of time for reckless driving.

Another thing that bothers me, why isn't English the official language of the United States? I am getting sick of looking for jobs as an attorney that are requiring you to be bilingual, with Spanish always being the second language. Perhaps if we bothered to enforce our immigration laws this wouldn't be the case, but I am not taking this thread where it shouldn't go.

Careful with the line you're treading here.

What you just posted makes absolutely no sense. Even if English were the official language, there will always be individuals who come from another country where their native tongue is their primary form of communication. On top of that, the jobs aren't saying that if you don't know English you can't apply; They're saying that they prefer someone who can also speak Spanish to allow them to communicate effectively with others in this world.

Don't be upset because you don't have the skills they are looking for.

Having a JD (and a bar license of course) should be about the extent of the requirements for a job as an attorney in places other than firms that specialize in international law. Employers expecting you to speak multiple languages is crossing the line for those positions.

I have a client now who has been in this country at least a dozen years and still cannot speak English. This is more or less the norm in Western Mass, you can't tell me that isn't a problem for society. If I were to move to Quebec, I'd learn French. We allow laziness and it sickens me.

I wouldn't. They understand english there.

Seriously, french is mandatory in Canada through Grade 9. I can barely count to 20 the program was so bad. The french immersion schools are a lot better and we might be putting our kids in them. They will actually learn both languages (my wife can speak both).

We do have to accept the fact we need immigration to keep our population growing due to low birth rates. Some things can be frustrating but its a fact of life.

We promote laziness all across our society. You think you won't find these issues within the Social Security system? Or how about Assisted Living?

I fail to see the correlation with a language requirement at a job. It's the same thing in different locales throughout the country. If you're upset about it in Western Massachusetts, don't ever move to Miami looking for work.

I can only assume French. The laws regarding languages are extremely tough over there. Store owners can't even have english on over 10% of the signs. Some of these laws have been overturned but they are fanatical about preserving their language and culture. One thing to remember is that while Canada is bilingual, only one province is actually declared bilingual and that's New Brunswick. Every other province is english with Quebec being french.

It's really nice to sit there and watch 5 people use the restroom and walk out without washing their hands, then when I am done washing my hands I go to leave and the only way out is to grab the handle of the door those same 5 people just used with their filthy hands.

What grinds my gears are people who think washing their hands after using the bathroom puts them on some kind of hygienic pedestal, when in fact there's nothing particularly 'filthy' about your genitals or bathrooms. Unless you're whizzing all over your hands, what about touching your member for a few seconds makes you think your hands are in dire need of washing? In fact, you made my next point for me: the door itself has as many germs on it as anything in the bathroom; and it's not just bathroom doors - it's doors in general. Moreover, things like car keys, cell phones, shopping cart handles, your car's steering wheel, table tops - this list goes on and on - are all things with a higher germ concentration than your average bathroom, let alone your junk. Yet there's no custom for washing your hands after touching those items.

Honestly, how filthy does your wang have to be so that you're ready to compare touching it with touching something that really makes you wanna wash your hands? When I take a leak, I'm touching my dong with two, maybe three fingertips. OMG I HAD BETTER WASH! Please. If anything, I should be washing my dong because my hands just touched it!

One might make the case that using the bathroom is a good excuse for washing your hands, as it is indeed a good idea to wash your hands regularly, but this notion of washing your hands because you just used the bathroom is an unfounded, unjustified and antiquated custom that, I believe, is most likely rooted in the anti-sex, anti-body tradition that says 'sex is dirty, your genitals are dirty, wash yourself!' Nonsense.

Canada wants to keep Quebec and doesn't understand what the big deal is. The issue is much smaller now than in 1995. Quite frankly, the seperatists leading the movement back then figured they would make out better financially which was a big reason for doing it. In terms of transfer payments from the federal goverment to the provincial government, Quebec gets more than they pay and yet 90% of the separatists believe its the other way around. For years english Canada let the separatists spew lies and garbage and after almost losing Quebec in a referendum marred by voting fraud (by the separatists), Canada finally stood up and said enough. We've changed the laws saying a referendum must be a clear question and represent a large majority, not just 50% + 1 to secede from a country.

Traditionally 30 to 40% of the people in Quebec still want to secede. They see themselves as Quebecers first rather than Canadians unlike every other province. They can be annoying but the issue is rather dead. We still have the federal Bloc Quebecois and the provincial Parti Quebecois parties that are trying to secede but they aren't pushing that right now. For those that are unaware of the troubles in the 1970s with separatists, they should google FLQ and read about how Canada had domestic terrorists in Quebec that killed a high ranking politician as well as bombed things trying to force this issue.
