    Re: SOCAL Wildfires

I remember they were reporting the Irvine fire as arson.

I haven't really been following the news though, so I'm not totally up-to-date.

We came home last night, but I didn't take the time to post because I was keeping an eye out for any developments in the Carmel Valley/Del Mar area. They finally gave our area the green light earlier this morning.

Sunday, I knew something was up at around 2 in the afternoon when I saw smoke while my family and a few friends were out at lunch in Tierrasanta. I got home and the whole Carmel Valley area was filled with smoke from the Witch Creek Fire. It was really windy that night and into Monday. There was a tree that was uprooted in nearby Del Mar Heights Rd, blocking one westbound lane. Stayed in La Jolla Monday and Tuesday, but it's a relief to have a little bit of clearness here in the Carmel Valley area, even though I can still see smoke coming from the Northeast.

I didn't even bother going to SDSU Monday morning even though I had a midterm and it was supposed to be a crucial week for all four of my classes. I was disappointed they didn't cancel classes on Monday to begin with, so I missed three classes. Fortunately it seems like everything may be pushed back, but I hate to see this kind of stuff happen.

It is like 2003 all over again maybe even worse than the 2003 fires here in San Diego. I feel sorry for those who lost their homes and bless all those firefighters braving these fires.

Edit: Just to give you all updates, there were a ton of fires here in San Diego alone, and I know there are more elsewhere in Southern California. Two of the fires were contained (Coronado Hills, McCoy Fire), Witch Creek and Harris Fires are still burning (eastward I believe), Rice Fire is also threatening to merge with a fire in the neighboring north county. There are three fires in Camp Pendleton (leading to I-5 to be closed for some time this morning). Poomacha Fire is near the Palomar Mountain area. They fear that Poomacha and Witch Creek fires may merge. Witch Creek already merged with the San Pascual Fire on Monday.
This is a lot, and I mean a lot worse than the 2003 fire. Some are saying it's the worst fire or fires in the history of the state.

As far as arson. Nothing official yet, at least for the ones in SD. At least one of them was started due to a transformer that overloaded and blew up.

yeah I heard this is worse than 2003. Insane how fast those fires grew. Is the I-5 open near Camp Pendleton? There seems to be a fire right next to the freeway.

5 was closed there in both directions, but was opened this afternoon.

Totally depends on where you are. I am in Carlsbad, so I am quite a bit north and quite a bit west of SDSU. Air Quality along the coast has been bad.

Air quality is awful here, it's basically all smoke and ash.

School is canceled tomorrow for me. After having school all week they decided to close every school in the Irvine Unified School District for tomorrow. I go to Woodbridge High and we're not even very close to the fires but the ash and smoke is still pretty bad.

Anyone see foxnews the other night? They actually tried to suggest that Al Quada could be responsible for these fires.

                    Just Wow.

Now's not the time for conspiracies. Poomacha fire was started in a building, I believe Witch Creek, the largest in San Diego started because of either a downed power line or a broken transformer... that one is still being investigated.

We have bigger worries here. For those who lost homes, they got to deal with scammers and looters. For those still evacuated, they have to deal with hotel price gouging.

I hate people who try to take advantage of the situation.

I heard about, interesting theory. Now they say the Santiago fire down in Orange County was started by the Arsonist. The others probably by downed power lines and Santa Ana winds.
