Thanksgiving: Anyone Deep Fry their Turkey?

This will be my first time deep frying a turkey. Everyone I've talked to has had nothing but great things to say about it and after years of baking, grilling and smoking turkeys, I'm excitied to try something new.

Anyone else done this? I know it is becoming much more popular as of late. If so, any tips?

I've heard both from people who have injected marinade into the bird and those who have not...I was thinking of maybe doing half and half...the marinade I was going to use is a creole butter marinade, that is made for turkey and other poultry.

Also, what about dry rubs? Anyone know of a particularly good dry rub?

    Thanks.

I've had it one year at my uncle's place. I was surprised by how tender it was. Tasted really good but you can't get homemade gravy drippings from a deep fryer. I LOVE gravy for my turkey and potatoes. That's the only drawback.

Yeah, I see your point, but I guess you could still use the neck and giblets to come close.

Fried turkey with creole butter marinade? Damn, man, what time is dinner Thursday at your house? Leave a seat open for me!

        Have fun!

Go with the injectable marinades...dry rubs don't hold up as well.
Maintaining temperature is the only challenge, keep a thermometer in the oil and keep it stoked to around 350 the whole time.

I've heard good things, but haven't ever had it... I agree with an earlier poster too... I really miss the gravy!

You should probably revisit this post after Thursday and let us know how it turns out.

Had it a few times, only way to eat turkey on Thanksgiving IMO.

I've never had it, either, but I bet it's fantastic. After all, the greatest food ever known to man, true Buffalo chicken wings, are nothing but a raw chicken deep fried. Same concept with the turkey.

It's only when people try to add breading to Buffalo wings that they get all f*cked up. Same with sesame, teriyaki and all of those other heretical sauces that people try to put on wings.

                Take care,

Agree, wings are only good with BBQ or Buffalo sauce (hotter the better).

Once you have turkey deep fried, you will never want it any other way, trust me on that.

Last year we smoked a turkey, now that's good too.

non fried turkeys have been eliminated from the menu of every family member I know

my dad is the official fried turkey chef, he ends up cooking about 10 for various family members and his job.
