Taking off my dev hat and putting my consumer hat on... I have a simi-related question for you all.

First off, I try and buy my games at some type of game centric store when at all possible. That said, I'm REALLY getting sick of the pre-order or don't get the game syndrome that seems to be plaguing "us". I flat out refuse to place a single pre-order and as much as it boggles the girl at Gamestop I somehow feel that I am making a stand. A itty bitty stand, but a stand nonetheless.

So where do you guys stand on pre-orders? A necessary evil? Corporate evil not wanting to take any risk actually stocking games? Good for the industry? I mean really, when was the last time you pre-ordered a pair of shoes? Perhaps you pre-order your groceries too?

I am going to shed some light on this pre-order topic.

Pre-orders equal guaranteed sales for the company. And its not only Gamestop that does it. Wal Mart, Target, Toys R US, Circuit City, C&C Games, GameForce, and quite a few others do pre-orders.

I for one, do pre-order games. Its not that I really feel that if I don't I won't get the game, but its the fact that I know where I can pick up my game and when. I don't have to drive to store A, only to find out that they sold out and now must drive to store B. The money that is put down on a pre-order goes towards the game, its not an extra fee.

And as far as employees being "graded" on pre-orders, that is true. Employees at Gamestop are considered "sales people". They are graded on pre-orders and subscriptions.

Any other secrets you want to know about? Just kidding, there are no secrets.

You will change your tune when you go to buy your game that you worked on and it is sold out come release day.

In all seriousness, when it comes to baseball games the first batch that comes in is for pre-orders. They may have 5 extra mainly because the games are released at a point in the season where there is not high demand for the game yet.

I can't remember the last time i went for a game on release and couldn't find plenty in stock at best buy, circuit city, or walmart. Pre-orders are 100% worthless. Add in the fact that they rip you off with trade ins, then overcharge for used games, and it's pretty worthless to me.

I only need ebay, best buy, and gamefly.

From my experience pre-orders are a waste of time. I always just go to Walmart at midnight an I'm always able to find the game I'm looking for.

I got in trouble when I worked there because I would only ask people once. I'd ask them if they were interested in preordering anything and I'd show them the preorder binder and that was it. That was one of the reasons my manager didn't like me.

I don't like preordering for one reason and one reason only...I'm lazy...and I don't know if I'll be near the local GameStop the day a game comes out. There's about 4 other stores that sell games that I pass on my way home, and GameStop is just out of the way.

So...for me...it's a "I don't feel like driving all the way to GameStop" thing. That's why I won't preorder.

I don't like preordering for one reason and one reason only...I'm lazy...and I don't know if I'll be near the local GameStop the day a game comes out. There's about 4 other stores that sell games that I pass on my way home, and GameStop is just out of the way.

On top of that, being here in NYC, you can usually find the game much earlier on the street than in any Gamestop. I don't care if I can get my $5 back.

True dat. I have at the most 7 different options to find a game on release day. Some times I may end up taking a journey to find a game but nonetheless, I've never had a problem not finding a game. Plus it'll suck if I paid full price for a game only for the GS to not have it in while another store has recieved their shipment. I can understand if your options are limited but if you have Walmarts and Targets within reach then I find the pre-order useless.

Yeah...I hate the feeling of being "tied down" when something comes out...I can stop by wherever on the way home from work (or at lunch) and I drive by enough places it makes it easy.

I don't see anything at all pre-ordering for a game. I mean the store is 5 minutes from my house and they never get them late. if I want to make sure I am going to get the game, why not put $5 down that go towards the game to make sure I get it when I want it?

Pre-ordering is also nice for unkown games that might or might not reach big chain stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

You know what got me. the fact that I asked to Preorder Fire Pro Wrestling Returns and they wouldnt let me beccause they do not accept preorders for titles 19.99 and under anymore. But they did when ESPN NFL 2k5 came out because I preordered that. I brought that up to them and they said well that was then and this is now. I proceeded to preorder from buy .com and spent 7.39 with Google Checkout.

I think pre-orders are pointless, I have yet to see any game that I've wanted not be in stock and if one store is out then there's about 5 other stores in the immediate area where I could get the game.
