I think its awesome you're gonna give it a shot.....good luck with the lifestyle change. Don't let the naysayers get to you, you don't have to justify your reasoning in my book."You can not ensure success, but you can deserve it." - John Quincy Adams

Re: So Who Else Doesn't do the Flesh Thing
How good was that first steak after six years?I think it's B12. Whatever 'B' is found in chicken is the one the doctor was referring to.
DC: Life as a vegetarian was easy breezy. I didn't really lose weight or anything, but I think it's easy to stay healthy on the right kind of veggie diet. It was decent though. I stopped for a few reasons. I got what I wanted out of it, I wanted an easier route to the vitamins, and I wanted to start putting on some real weight. I was working out at the time, and I wanted to get some more muscle on my frame and get up to about 215. I ended up stopping at 210, because at 6 feet, that was bigger than I expected to be. Once I was back into meat, I just stuck with it, because I didn't feel any adverse effects.
I didn't feel that alleged nausea people feel when they go back to meat, not even for pork. I think that's psychosomatic. I just felt like I had more protein in me, lol.Comment

Hey, I thought they got rid of those things???
Good luck with the veggie diet. You have a lot more will power than I have, as I love steak, pork chops, and chicken. I'd imagine a veggie diet would be cheaper though, no?Comment

Re: So Who Else Doesn't do the Flesh Thing
good luck, I tired it, it lasted for like 3 months and that was all.I started out my lacto-vegetarian lifestyle yesterday, and I feel confident I can never consume any meat for the rest of my life.
My main concern: I'm pretty "muscular" and I'm fearing that I'll get skinny. Obviously I weight train to stay fit, for those who practice this lifestyle, I'll be fine right?
Also, any tips? One of my veggy friends said she takes an iron supplement and suggested I do the same, and a multi vitamin. I understand for men my age [19-51], the daily allowance for iron is 8 mg. So should I be taking a pill with a little less than that? Also with the multi vitamin, any advice on how much dosage should be in it? And any other tips as well?
I've done my fair share of research, but I'd like to get some personal responses as well.N.Y Mets

I still don't know why you would want to give up meat. Meat is good and good for you. Animals were made for us to eat and I intend to eat them as was intended.
But good luck anyways!

Re: So Who Else Doesn't do the Flesh Thing
You are way ahead of the New York Times Man.They are delicious Doc. But my reasoning isn't because it's cruel to eat animals, it's simply inefficient. Countless people could be fed with the grain livestock eat, as it requires 10 times as many crops to feed animals being bred for meat production as it would to feed the same number of people on a vegetarian diet.
I no longer want to support one of the largest downfalls to our enviornment. Animal farms are one of the biggest carbon producers on the planet, and cattle farming takes out about a football field of rainforest a day to produce about 250 hamburgers.
I realize it seems insignificant for one person to stop eating meat, while at the same time probably still purchase other animal products, but it helps me sleep better at night. I just wish more people could be fed.

If people didn't eat animals none of us would be here right now. Our ancestors would've starved. I just want to respect those brave peoples.Comment

Re: So Who Else Doesn't do the Flesh Thing
Those grain-fed animals, in turn, are contributing to health problems among the world’s wealthier citizens — heart disease, some types of cancer, diabetes. The argument that meat provides useful protein makes sense, if the quantities are small. But the “you gotta eat meat” claim collapses at American levels. Even if the amount of meat we eat weren’t harmful, it’s way more than enough.
All right now that's the dumbest thing I've heard.
Basically the problem is the efficiency of producing the large amounts of meat. We need to find a way to limit the damage these farms do to the environment.Comment

Re: So Who Else Doesn't do the Flesh Thing
I actually got a detention in 6th grade for making a vegetarian cry to our teacher because I kept moo'ing in her ear during class, after she had given a presentation about how people shouldn't eat cows.
Man, I was such a badass in 6th grade.
Good luck to you, man. I could never give up chicken and steak.Comment
