Re: So Who Else Doesn't do the Flesh Thing

    i respect that....thats a huge lifestyle change

i think i could give up red meat and lacto (Latcose intolerant anyway) but i don't think I could give up chicken, turkey, or fish

    just curious..

What are your thoughts on fish?

and I know people who have made changes like that in regards to their eating habits and lets just say it wasnt pretty for the first week or until your body gets used to it

I no longer want to support one of the largest downfalls to our enviornment. Animal farms are one of the biggest carbon producers on the planet, and cattle farming takes out about a football field of rainforest a day to produce about 250 hamburgers.

I realize it seems insignificant for one person to stop eating meat, while at the same time probably still purchase other animal products, but it helps me sleep better at night. I just wish more people could be fed.

Re: So Who Else Doesn't do the Flesh Thing

Fish is a huge issue with me. I gave up meat for reasons totally unrelated to fish, but I'm thinking 'is the vegetarian title' important to me? Obviously if I consumed fish I wouldn't be considered one, and I think that'd bother me as I'd be ostracized by both omnivores and vegetarians.

I've visited some other boards with vegetarians, and they are mostly insane. They are vegetarians for completely differing reasons than me, and just want to protect the sanctity of animals in general. They condemn eating fish as much as cows and chicken. Oh well I guess in the end I shouldn't care what anyone thinks really. But you brought up a good point about the fish.

Ive done the veggie thing, not for your reasons (which are fine) , but just to try it out with this girl I was dating.......after about a month my muscle mass totally went down.....I mean to the point people started noticing......I had to dead that quick.

I dunno man, you are GOING to lose some weight on the veggie tip, hopefully your body doesnt react to it like mine did, but im sure there is something out there to help you maintain.... but if your not gonna do fish its going to be even harder....

man I ive lost 15-20 pounds through the last couple of weeks.....ive got the Spiderman shape right now....lol

All i know is my sister was a vegiterian for 2 years and was sick more in those two years than i have been in my life.

There are just to many things that "hurt the environment" now days. If you tried to save everything from trees, to animals then you pretty much couldn't do anything. You would be living in a shack with no electricity and eating grass all day.

That's sad to hear, and it's not surprising to read that about your sister. A lot of vegetarians get sick or don't get the proper nutrition without very precise diet planning.

Man so nobody here is one? I'm surprised.

it's really hard and expensive to be a vegetarian...u have to monitor everything you consume and take all of those vitamins to get the stuff you lack because you're not eating meat...which makes me wonder y anyone would do it since our bodies are so trained to eat meat

noble cause I guess, although kind of pointless given your reasons. The land used for cattle grazing is really only suitable for grazing animals. The midwest isn't less populated because of a meat conspiracy, it's just not great land for much else.

As for the waste of grains, that's more of a result of commercial farmers feeding their cattle in stalls on the cheap, not because of human beings eating meat. You can easily hate cheap farming methods, while enjoying delicious meat. I don't really like how cows are kept in stalls and injected with antibiotics either. It's cruel, and makes the meat less healthy, as the methods are used to just churn out cheap beef. I still enjoy a nice hamburger and steak though. Go get organically raised livestock from a local butcher or something if it's that strong of an issue for you.

There's better ways to protest than giving up something our bodies were meant to do anyways.

I wish I didn't like the taste of meat. I hate knowing that I'm actually eating something that was once a living creature.

                            But...I love my meat.

Well the land may be only suitable for animals, but that's not what my point was. The grains that are used to feed them is my contention. They are fed gross amounts of grain when countless people die of starvation. Like I said I don't wish to get into moral pissing matches here, but you bring up some good points. Also those animals and native plants that live in those forests that are being cut down, who knows what that's doing to the habitat.

I still may keep fish in my diet after some consideration and discussion with a former food and nutrition professor.

I dont eat red meat at all, but i generally eat fish of some sort 5 days a week. Its hard to have that type of diet when you have family (especially kids who dont like fish) but i feel 100% better now that i dont eat red meat anymore. The average american has 8-10lbs of undigested red meat stuck in their body at any given time. Something tells me that isnt the way its supposed to be.
