Nice! And your grandparents went to all the places I promised myself I'll never go to, but it's nice to know they liked it. For me, give me just Tel Aviv and its 10 miles radius and that's it.

        The Greenfield Recorder

I love my local paper, they have a comments section for their stories. Instead of promoting a marketplace of ideas and allowing the residents of this area to have a forum in which to discuss the happenings of the area they use it to randomly delete comments that don't meld with whomever has the job. Anything in which reflects a negative light on local politicians will be deleted, ditto anything that criticizes those in "control" of the town.

I surmise, if Thomas Jefferson were around to see this behavior, he would spit in the face of the quasi-government censors.

So I just went to my local FYE, I was going to buy a game to kill some time, but guess what, it closes at 6pm. Seriously, 6pm in the summer? When did retail stores start operating on banker's hours?

You're in Greenfield, Massachusetts. I'll put large money on a Recorder conspiracy. Rub out the businesses they don't like by making them close at bizarre hours.

It wouldn't surprise me, I could write a novel on the things I hate about this town. It is quickly becoming the joke of Massachusetts and it is just sad, I am hoping we can sell and get out soon.

Seriously though on The Recorder. They ran a story of how a local restaurant was closing today which apparently happened with no notice to the employees. I simply posted I agree, it is a shame that these people lost their job with no notice and that was deleted. I highly encourage the people of OS to comment away on their site, no membership required.

It's so much of a joke, here in Radford we say, "Man, I am so glad I don't live in Greenfield, Massachusetts."

                No lie.

Wouldn't surprise me, Greenfield is a perfect example why women shouldn't hold political power.

Wait, that was a positive comment why was it deleted? Unless the original story was slanted in favour of the closing of said restaurant. I think the Recorder's website would be best suited if they had a moderation policy on the posts. That is, nothing is actually posted on the website until it's approved. It'll still stifle a lot of people but it wouldn't look so blatant.

Eh I dunno, England and India has done fairly well in its history with female leaders Unfortunately the same can't be said of Canada. Poor Kim Campbell. She was in an unfortunate position that anyone would've failed in.

Well when it comes to issues with the town politics, the censorship is much more blatant. Our town recently had to lay off all of the teachers from the public schools and their jobs are currently in the air because of gross mismanagement of the school budget (in January they were already millions in the red). Those who post comments that criticize the current political regime will see their comments deleted, those who support the regime are generally safe.

The same thing happened when the issue of economic expansion came up with the idea to bring in large "box stores" to place right off of the interstate. Well this town has one long standing department store whose owners hold tremendous clout, they oppose these stores from coming in, mainly so they can continue to pay their employees non-livable wages. People who side with them can comment freely, and you guessed it if you are opposed and speak up for expansion your comments will be deleted. The Recorder website is basically another branch of the local town government who engages in what can only be properly defined as propaganda.

Wow...That's pretty blatant and disturbing that a town/city in America can be so backward and exclusionary.

I agree with you, it's time to move out.

Well to be fair no one with much intelligence gives any credit to The Recorder, which is more appropriately referred to as The Distorter. It isn't only that they are biased with politics, they are also extremely racist in their coverage of stories. A few years back there was a fight between a black kid and a white kid, with the black kid killing the white kid. They printed numerous stories portraying the black child in a negative light while never mentioning the extreme hardships he had to grow up with. Meanwhile they portrayed the white kid as the poor, clean cut victim. In reality he had spent time in juvy and was a real thug as well as the aggressor of the altercation. None of that ever made it to press, this is one example of a sickening trend.

I do have a newfound love for wireless internet...I'm sitting here in my dorm bed with a computer, and for some reason I find that amazing.

Got my Rosetta Stone today, starting to learn Greek. The program really throws you out there, but it actually works. I've learned bits and pieces of Spanish (1.5 years), German (2 years), French (1 year) and Latin (2 years). I was lucky those all have pretty much the same alphabet. I can't even imagine trying to learn something like Chinese or Japanese with all of the "letters" they have.

Let us know how you're going with that. I've seen the commercials for the Rosetta Stone and I dunno, I find their claims a little dubious.
