Hey Acid...if you truly like her, it's worth losing a friend over. I actually lost my best friend in the world, a chick I've known since I was five (and we bathed together...WOOT!...oh wait, TMI) because I thought things would work better if we went out.
Point being, go with your gut man. Friends come and go...as it is, my "best" friend is a dude who just got married 700 miles a way (whom I was cool with in high school and got kicked out in college as we got in a fight our first week with some frat douches) and my other friends are folks my wife has met through her company.
Friends come and go, and you just have to look long term...you might NOT ask her out to preserve a friendship, that may or may not end, or you do and see how strong your friendship really is.
