Prosecutors today decided to charge seven Polk County teenagers - accused of pummeling a 16-year-old and videotaping it for YouTube and MySpace - as adults. The eighth teen involved is 18 years old and is already considered an adult under the law.

All eight face charges of battery and kidnapping, which is punishable of up to life in prison. Mercades Nichols, Brittni Hardcastle and Brittany Mayes face an additional charge of tampering with a witness, which holds up to a 5-year prison term.

Polk County officials identified the teens involved as Nichols, 17; April Cooper, 14; Hardcastle, 17; Kayla Hassell, 15; Mayes, 17; Cara Murphy, 16; Zachary Ashley, 17; and Stephen Schumaker, 18.

All are from Lakeland except Hassell, who is from Mulberry. Schumaker and Ashley served as lookouts during the beating, authorities said.

The teens' first appearance in adult court is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m

who said it did? i was just reading other peoples opinions and they were talking about attempted murder and how it was worse then they imagined the video would be. im thinking what exactly were you expecting if you thought that was worse?

I didn't pay attention to you before but the video that has been shown isn't the whole thing. She was lured to the house and then jumped by 6 girls who beat her until she was unconcious then wouldn't let her leave the house. She has damage to her hearing and her eye due to having her head smashed against the wall and the floor.

Parental involvement makes all the world of difference, but kids have to make the right choice. I have 3 kids with one on the way. A 17 year old girl that my wife and I took in after she ran away, 8 yr old son and 4 yr old daughter. I used to think that parenting had little impact on the choices made outside the home until I evaluated the kids that I work with on a daily basis and compared their home lives. The difference in my 17 year old is amazing. She now wants to achieve, doesn't break curfew, its proud of her appearance and has standards that are non-negotiable. That was a choice she made, but she had a parental structure that at times would frustrate her, but she now brags to her friends about having structure and a family that cares about her actions. It's not about how much money a family has, its truly about parents laying a foundation that the kids can be successful with out their involvement, because one day they will be grown and on their own. Parents who set boundaries on things like Myspace, facebook, dates, curfews, etc. produce kids who will resist during their youth, but tend to grow up to be the type of adult who understands that everything that I want may not be good for me to have. These girls obviously feel justified to gang up on one girl, I bet you in the coming days we will hear all of these parents defending their daughter's actions. This isn't the first nor will it be the last time they will defend and uphold the wrong doings of their kids. I have already typed too long...

I'm definitely not in favor of locking them away for life but they need to be severely punished. I'm not quite sure what I think it should be, though.

I hope because they are girls they are not lenient. The crime needs to be looked at not the gender, anything under a year is injustice to the victim.

Ask any Parole or Probation Officer, girls are almost always worse than guys at this age. It is amazing we always hear how girls develop and mature more quickly than guys, but when they do stuff like this they get more lenient sentences. This behavior and their lack of remorse thereafter is sociopathic, for the sake of society as a whole we're all better served if these girls never see the outside of a prison wall again.

If anything it's scary that kids at this age have that much anger over being "talked bad about."

I saw them at the arraignment... they looked like young, pre-teen girls....
