This is perhaps a really stupid question but I'm not an engineer, why can't we use solar power to make cars run, or at the very least act as a battery backup in a Hybrid type car.

I've deduced that it's pretty much over for gasoline. By that I mean we'll see $4.50 before we ever see $2.50 again, let alone $1.50.

As soon as I can afford it, I'm going green with my next vehicle. No question about it.

I am sure you could use it as some type of supplement. They do have solar cars, in fact there is a competetion every year to produce the best solar car and they actually race a long distance, but they don't have enough power to replace what we are used to.

But actually it all boils down to politics and money. They people who are getting rich off this situation are paying the right people enough money to secure their interests.

but companies like exxon/mobile could easily funnel off even a couple of billions from their massive profits to research and develop alternative enegery sources. They'd be able to take their power in the oil industry over to the new stuff.

Maybe they already are, but it just seems to me that it would be a wise investment to do that, as even their people have to see what's ahead of them.

Yea I'm going to make the switch too. I saw some "expert" today talking about oil being $225/barrell and $12/gallon by 2012.

Even if it goes to $175/$8 it will be ridiculously expensive to drive!

I just don't see why it would ever get that high. $4 dollars a gallon will piss people off, but they gotta keep driving. When it gets to $6 or $7, that's when it messes with people's lives and ability to even buy it. Also, food, clothes, and pretty much everything will cost more because of shipping and gas prices. All while people continue to make what they do now.

Even though we have the infrastructure built up for driving everywhere, if it even gets up to half of your $12 prediction, things will get bad. If people think a recession is happening now, wait until people stop spending on anything because gas costs them $7 a gallon.

You made a great point. Gas and cost of living keeps going up but wages do not. I have not had a raise in 5 years. I was told I am at the cap they can pay for my position. Yet, the cap is not adjusted to account for the cost of living increase.

There are 3 employees in my department who were not capped out and their raises were 5 cents, 6 cents and 13 cents an hour.

Some of us have to drive. Bogus public transportation is not the answer and at some point something is going to explode from all of this greed.

Housing is down, gas is up, everything can't continue to just spiral one way without some kind of consequence in the future. I honestly wish people would just refrain from getting gas on certain days of the week.

I've heard every excuse in the book, but with the amazing kinds of things we've done, men in space, a telescope that can see light from thousands of years ago, cures for various unknown diseases, don't tell me this is the lone unsolvable human puzzle.

They could, but they don't. Sure they put some token millions into researching alternatives, but its just not as lucrative. And in Business today all decisions are short term based because all investing these days is done in the short term and CEO's are hired for short terms of service.

Just like big tobacco could try to find something healthy and addictive. Why bother, people are addicting to their driving freedom just like they are to cigarettes.

Again some of us have to drive, and not only that, I dont drive anymore than i ever have, so i have to suffer because of some schmuck in Omaha who decides to drive his hummer on a daily?

The oil execs don't care. As long as they set the guiness book of records for most consecutive record profits they dont even think to use that tax write-off money for something productive for people.

The other thing you have to remember is that oil is priced in U.S. Dollars. As the U.S. dollar has decreased in value vs. other currencies, the price of oil is getting out of hand. For example take the Canadian dollar, it used to be only worth 80 cents American. Now its worth $1, its traded even. So during the same period of time, the price of oil went up from $80 to $100 per barrell, while it became $20 more expensive for the U.S., it basically remained the same price in Canadian real dollars.

Our government is intentionally creating a monetary policy to keep the dollar week to increase exports and increas direct foreign investment.

Without getting political, the economy should find some way to fix itself in the near future. Both conventional economic schools of thought work better than our current system of spend now, pay later.

These companies throw money at the issue and fund some research, but they don't really get behind anything. They want to keep making money, so they fund some grants, etc to make the environmentalists happy, all without really doing anything.

It is not a wise investment yet. There hasn't been any tangible solution that will work for the majority of the population. Right now, they are creating huge amounts of sunk costs and they can't do that in their budgets. You have to show results so your budget doesn't get cut and that doesn't happen right now. If there is ever a fuel that replaces gas, it will probably come for some lab/research company and not the actual gas company. Then the idea will be used by the gas companies to keep their dominance.

That is EXACTLY what I'm saying. How come we can't come up with anything better than gas to run vehicles? It seems like the most dated technology that we have now.
