Was this the right move by the ref to eject me?

So I'm in a YMCA D1 Basketball League not a rec a competitive league. So my team is down like 5 point with 8 minutes left in the game. We haven't had the lead yet just so you know so it was a big turnaround. So i get an offensive rebound and i have a like pretty nice layup and i always make these, so i put right back up and i missed it so i got pissed and yelled the "F BOMB" out of frustration cause my team needed that bucket Now i didn't say it to another player i said it to myself. So with like 6 minutes left the other team gets 2 foul shots and i line up on the line and after the 1st shot the ref comes over to me and says, "No cussing or threatening of another player is allowed in the league." so he booted me. Was this the right call, I mean i know you cant cuss but c'mon i didn't threaten a guy.

Long story short: I miss a gimme layup off a offensive rebound and say the "f bomb" out of frustration

If the league says no cussing, then I guess it's the right move?

If I was him, I would have given you a T and a warning.

I'm not sure, because u didn't say it to any1 - just to yourself. That's a tough one, but the ref had probably been told to call every curse or bad language because they want to keep it clean. But c'mmon, u can't keep it clean in sports, it's part of it. It's like telling some1 "u can play ball but don't sweat".

If that was it and nothing else, i cant see it happening. Although the YMCA is pretty tough on that. I used to work out at a Y and i was walking in and dropped all my stuff one day, and said "Damnit" pretty loud, but at myself bc i dropped keys, phone, wallet, etc. The receptionist/secretary lady came over and told me to leave for cursing.

I reasoned it out with her, but she was "very disappointed that the youth uses that language" (i was 23 at the time)

I can understand it if they're trying to foster an environment for families. If I was the ref and there were only adults in the gym, I probably would've let it go. If there were kids there, I would've given you the heave-ho.

I had the same thing happen to me in a high school baseball game. Struck out with runners on base and dropped the F-Bomb and got kicked out too, I know how you feel.

Not too surprising given the power trip these Y league refs have.

Re: Was this the right move by the ref to eject me?

There's always going to be ref's who go by the book and don't use practical commom sense when it comes to officiating games. Anyone who has played sports has had these experiences. Just look at the Suns/Spurs series last year when the Suns players were ejected for leaving the bench even though there was no threat what so ever to their actions....sometimes refs see black and white and a rule is a rule regardless of whether or not it was breaking the rule which was actually intended.

There was a game this year in the NCAA tourney where the annoucers actually commended the ref because he didn't call a T when a player slammed the ball to the ground because the ref recognized the player was upset at himself missing a short or something and not at the ref's.

Also, there may be some history behind the rule and maybe they have had numerous complaints from parents who's kids heard non-stop cussing in what is supposed to be a family-friendly place.

Do I think the ref went overboard? Absolutely. He should have come up to you, told you to watch your mouth and given you a warning. Then if you would have done it again, it's on you.

I was the same way though, I would cuss up a storm when I pitched, but always aimed at me. I'm suprised I never got a warning, but it's probably because my words were muffled by the PING of the bat hitting the ball

Well, I was in a YMCA basketball league (just a recreational one) and my coach used to drop the f-bomb on us. I really think you probably should have been kicked out if those were the rules, but I was sorta surprised for our coach to be using that kind of language during games since it was the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) and all. I really don't care, but still...

Re: Was this the right move by the ref to eject me?

An F-bomb in the form of interjection out of personal frustration should never constitute an ejection. Though you shouldn't necessarily get away scot-free either.

About three weeks ago, I was fortunate to get away scot-free with something I did. In my adult league, I hit a one-hopper to the 5.5 hole and the shortstop barehanded it and tried to Jeter it to first. I beat it by a step, and the ball must have short-hopped the first baseman as he wasn't able to scoop it. As I was slowing down, I noticed the ball was about to come from underneath me, so I stopped quickly, and sort of stopped with my right foot (meaning my body had then faced the field). I was walking back to the base, but the first baseman grabbed the ball, tagged me, and the umpire called me out for making an attempt to second base. I yelled, "I didn't ****ing turn, I ****ing stopped! ****!"

I've never yelled anything like that to an umpire before. I've yelled at umpires, but never with cussing. Thankfully since I'm here and not home, my parents didn't have to see that. He said (angrily), "Take a seat on your bench, kid." I started to back pedal a bit, still looking at him, when my coach ran from behind me to argue the call. It was he who was ejected, and he was just far too pissed at the lousy job the umpires were doing that day overall. He never cursed.

                        I don't know how I got away scot-free and you didn't. I guess it's just... life isn't fair, I suppose.

Some of you guys need attitude adjustments. I understand getting frustrated when you mess up, but the whole yelling cusswords as loud as you can is extremely immature. Learn how to control yourself and keep your cool.

And really, we don't need anymore "Guess what happened in my rec league/YMCA/pickup game the other day?" threads.

Some people like to write about things that happened to them and share it with others. What's wrong with that?

If no cussing is the rule then yes you should've been ejected. Shows that the ref is doing a good job.
