I tend to side with the notion that its silly to have certain words that people just assume they're supposed to be offended by, theres going to be contradictions all over the place just due to human nature. Which is why I understand that the appropriateness of some words varies depending on the situation. Personally, nothing you say to me is going to offend me. If I think it was inappropriate then I'll probably just be embarrassed for you because it makes you look like an idiot, or is going to lead someone to jump to conclusions about who you are. I mean for all we know these kids that were cussing are good kids but because they really didn't think about what they were saying we've got people who've never met or even seen them labeling them all kinds of things. I'm not saying thats wrong really, I'm just saying it has a bigger impact than they probably would realize.

Society has changed over each decade. The ignorance and disrespect is getting younger and younger. It's a sad state of affairs.

And the pack mentality is what really starts the crap that happens in every day life.

That being said, I'm a city kid to the fullest. I don't want to be in the city anymore, but that's another subject.Being where I'm from and going downtown, I've been subjected to the pack mentality...the idiot factor. It never got to me. I was taught not to be an idiot. When I go to a movie, I want to watch the movie. Not clown around. That would be a waste of dough. I don't go out and do things to people for the hell of it because I wouldn't do something to another that I wouldn't want them to do to me.

I don't trace it to parenting or music or whatever. It's the person. It's lazy to just blame it on video games or say the parents are at fault.

I always say that people just refuse to believe that many people are born bad apples.

I know people from sick situations, born of crack mothers, had things done to them as kids, surrounded by bad family members and friends. And these people are some of the calmest, friendliest people you could meet.

It really depends on the person and I've already determined that many people do not know how to act in public or even in their own homes. Too many bad folk out there.

I've always been one of those people that really don't see bad in words. There's no such things as a curse word to me its all about context. I don't really use the f word to say "**** you " to people to much, I use it more in other ways that isn't malicious, just another word. I just think there are alot of other things kids learn and see that are worse than words. To me words are just that, words nothing else, I put alot more stock in actions.

I really believe the parents set the example. Almost every bad kid I've known either came from a broken home or had parents that had no involvement in their parents lives.

I'm not saying great parents can't have bad kids and bad parents can't have good ones, but the parents set the boundries, actions, emotion and examples that the kids follow. I think each individual has something to do with it, but they have to work that much harder at it.

One of my neighbors has two daughters, one is a junior in high school, the other in middle school. She has no idea what kind of grades her kids earn. She lets the oldest kid go out every weekend to party's where she knows alcohol and college aged kids will be. She pays for everything for her kid and doesn't care that she can't hold a job for more than a month and honestly thinks she's doing a good job. Meanwhile, the kid is constantly in trouble, rarely goes to school and does nothing but mooch of the parents without ever saying thank you. She grounds her for a week and lets her off 2 days later. The kid totaled her car (which her parents paid for) and while it was in the shop, she drove her moms nice car while the mom drove the economy rental car.

I can already tell that the parents have instilled no drive at all in this girl. She thinks she's just going to walk on to some university, when she doesn't have a chance (turns out she barely has a 2.0 gpa). Once she graduates from HS, it's going to be a shock to the mom, when she finds out that her daughter will be living with her for the next 2-5 years.

I don't disagree that there are bad apples or good seeds, but I think most are neutral and are influenced by the people around them.

I mean you can't expect a 4 or 5 year old to know and understand right from wrong. It's up to the parents to explain and enforce boundries and rules. There are times to let kids learn things on their own, but if you don't teach a kid to say please and thank you or have him open a door for an elderly person, how is he going to learn?

They are offensive. Do you drop the "N" bomb regularly or use racial slurs? Those are horrible words with historic pasts, but are taboo. According to you, its ok to use these words and phrases, bc their intent is deemed ok by you, but as harmful by others.

No one is telling you what words to say, but not everyone wants to hear those words. Its about respect for your fellow man (or woman) when you are out. I, myself, like to see the good in people and show them respect, in hopes that i get the same in return.

Anybody who curses within the normal flow of conversation (That shirt is f*cking sweet, man....My new glasses are the sh*t....) and doesn't realize that they sound low class or stupid are, in all likelihood, low class and stupid.

I try to teach my students this because the mouths of high schoolers are filled with this. When they want to say they are serious they say, "Yo, I'm dead ***." When they want to say that they are cold in the classroom they say "It's cold up in this bitch."

Well, that's what they said. They know how I deal with cursing and that doesn't fly anymore. Even if they do let a curse slip they almost always apologize or catch themselves.

If you are an "adult", you need to speak and act like it. All of this "these are just words" talk is ridiculous. Sure they are words, but they are words that are 9 times out of 10 unnecessary and just wreck any adult conversation you can possibly have.

Im a white guy, not as white as they come, but close, and i HATE hearing the N word, or any other racial slur, its about a lack of respect. I would never say that or allow any of my family or friends to use that language. Its demeaning. There's enough BS in this world to get us down, we dont need to dig on each other to push it along.
