Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

For me it's all about service. The fact that my meal cost a certain amount has zero to do with the service. Do a good job, get a good tip. Vice versa.

Some Krogers have where you can order ahead and pick up your groceries curbside now.

Think you should tip the person who brings them out?

Walmart has a similar service and I never tip for it and they actually say not to tip them. These services are different since the employees are getting paid at least minimum wage.

Why should it matter if they're paid minimum wage or not?

Servers are typically the only ones being paid less than minimum wage, right? There may be some delivery drivers, but my experience has seen them being paid for more than 7.25.

My personal rule is - if someone in a service industry is doing something for me to make my life easier, I give them a tip.

Then why does Wal-Mart grocery pickup tell you that tips are not accepted? Normally see that when those doing the service are played at least minimum wage.

Probably because its more about Wal-Mart not wanting to fool around with adding tips to wages than anything else.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

                  I'm sure that's exactly it.

Why else would a company encourage people to NOT tip besides a money reason? They're going out of their way to not look out for their employees. How nice.

Guarantee those people would take the tip. I don't think we were supposed to accept them at a previous job of mine, but damn right I took the money every time. Expected? Nope. Happy as hell when someone did? Hell yes.

As for a service like the grocery pickup, I see it like picking up food at a pizza place or any takeout place. I don't want to pay the delivery charge and tip ($5 tip, $1-2 charge) so I pick up all the time. But I've been behind the counter so I always leave 2-3 bucks too. That's one coffee run a week I'm forfeiting to make someone's day. Worth it. But I would never expect someone to tip a pickup order (unless it's massive) so I don't expect them to tip a curbside pickup service.

But the people who do are most excellent.

                    Found this situation weird.

Went out to dinner. Only 5 of us.

                    Service was actually great.

Time to get the check and the waitress stands there at the table (without the check in hand) and asks, "Do you want me to add 18% or 20%?"

                    Me: *Awkward silence*

I know situations where you have a big party, the tip is automatically added on. Wasn't expecting her to verbally stand there and ask how much should she add before she even brings out the bill.

Awkwardly I answered 20%. She said Thank You and went to ring up the bill.

A party of only 5, I'm expecting to add the tip at the bottom when I get it like at most restaurants.

It was just a weird situation IMO.

FYI...if she just brought out the bill like normal I would've given 15% because that's pretty much my standard.

Man I just forgot to bring money to tip my tattoo artist. Welp I have to schedule another session on Thursday so I'm going to take the tip then. Man I hate I forgot it...

I probably would have said 0% since you asked. I'd be pissed.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

Had never seen this thread before today, went back and read some of the early posts (2008) and was absolutely horrified to find out that several people have rationalized it as being ok not to tip food servers. I'm still curled up in a ball, shocked and mortified, while typing this.

Other than an egregious total lack of etiquette or severe problems with fulfilling and delivering you order, "stiffing" (yes, that's what it's called no matter what one's cute, hipster rationalization might be) a waiter/waitress simply makes one a bad person. Even if that person is otherwise Mother Teresa. If one is the archetypal "poor college student" (woe!), then one really shouldn't be spending a lot of time at sit-downs being served food anyway unless parents are buying. And, no, I've never worked in a job where I was allowed to accept tips: full disclosure before I get accused of being an undercover waiter.

That said, I think people have a fair amount of latitude to determine what they believe is an appropriate percentage for their precise situation. Personally, I aim for about 20% in most cases. Sometimes a spell of OCD will overcome me and I will make it add up to a nice, round number even if that means going over 20%. I wouldn't fault anyone for coming in under 20% (or 15%) or tipping even more generously depending on the circumstances. For example, I recently treated some family out for my grandma's 85th birthday at Red Lobster (her favorite place, lol) and one of the people in the kitchen--an aspiring artist--made a really lavish presentation of the complimentary dessert with a birthday message scrawled over the plate in a really nice way. I tipped somewhere north of 25% on a bill well over $100 (the service other than that was good also).

Totally odd and unprofessional. But, from her perspective it worked (she got 20% instead of what might've been 15% had she not done it that way). I agree it's a rude approach, but it probably pales in comparison to treatment she gets from some customers, thus it probably seems reasonable to her.

Were it me in that situation as a customer, I might've asked the waitress to come bring me something so I could get a moment to figure out the tip without the inquisition, lol.

Well she blew the opportunity to get a return customer(s).

Also I could be a dick and write a poor Yelp review. I won't because I don't do that kind of stuff.

It's a shame because I really liked the restaurant and the food.
